The work addresses communities disproportionately targeted by structural neglect and coercive practices, including individuals in conditions of social, economic, or health vulnerability, as well as groups historically exposed to brutal explotation, institutional disregard, or constrained access to care and representation in their own societies, and the World at large. The dissertation scratches the surface on the mechanisms of silencing, from the betrayal of care, examining how such populations are rendered marginal through overlapping mechanisms of exclusion, normalization of harm, and asymmetries of power that limit their capacity to refuse, report, or recover, and it advances concrete pathways forward through strengthened accountability, higher standards of practice, and evidence-based interventions designed to protect dignity, restore agency, and improve outcomes even in contexts marked by persistent brutality and deficient oversight.

This invitation reflects more than five years of work carried out under sustained exposure to aggression and severe forms of violence, shaped by normalized neglect and complicity in conditions of acute vulnerability. It documents how such impunity enables harm to persist without consequence, resulting in isolation, material and professional damage, and lasting effects, which the dissertation critically examines and addresses. The work also interrogates prevailing attribution practices that reduce complex harm to presumed biological causes without adequate verification, while ongoing aggression remains unaddressed. It examines how institutional arrangements can incentivize silencing, normalize abuse, and shift responsibility onto those affected, thereby entrenching marginalization and chronicity through labeling, coercive practices, and asymmetries of power that compromise autonomy, accountability, and care.

The final phase of fieldwork in Indonesia combined academic training with continued exposure to harm, both direct and indirect, underscoring the persistence of violence across contexts. The study examines how such patterns are reproduced within communities and institutions, often normalized and insufficiently addressed, and argues for clear legal accountability alongside preventive frameworks. It further reflects on how labeling, discourse, and historical legacies shape perceptions of individuals and collectives, sometimes justifying exclusion or coercion under flawed premises. The dissertation emphasizes the need for rigorous standards, ethical consistency, and evidence-based safeguards to prevent the normalization of harm, distinguishing clearly between legitimate biological conditions and damage produced through social and institutional practices, and advocating for systems oriented toward protection, dignity, and the capacity to thrive rather than endure.

Attendance is open upon confirmation. The work is framed by a commitment to contribute through open science, education, and a one health perspective, while acknowledging that positions of authority are at times misused, including within academic settings, to normalize harm and undermine responsibility. The dissertation calls for robust ethical foundations, accountable governance, and evidence-based practice across contexts, emphasizing that even subtle abuses of power can have decisive effects when individuals are vulnerable. It concludes by advocating for systems that prioritize protection, integrity, and collective progress, with science and education oriented toward dignity, transparency, and the capacity to thrive.

As a final note, this message also invites empirically grounded contributions to an open access edited volume on reprisals against individuals exposing systemic harm across health, science, academia, and governance. The volume and event focuses on documented forms of retaliation with strict evidentiary standards, and will publish under a diamond model with open peer review, followed by a free to attend dissemination conference in late 2027.

This notice communicates expanded opportunities for collaboration, funding, and implementation within my ongoing European and international work, together with a transition in how open science communication and coordination are organized. New venues, tools, and platforms are being developed to extend reach, strengthen protection of contributors, and increase practical impact where needs are greatest. In this context, the laboratory notebook publication previously used to notify colleagues of major developments in shared ongoing work is permanently foreclosed, as its function is being replaced by more robust, safer, and scalable infrastructures designed to achieve the same objectives under stronger governance conditions.

Colleagues are invited to join the European COST Action CA24106 BEACON, established in 2022 and originating within the then newly formed Spanish chapter of the Aerospace Medical Students and Residents Organization, which myself was also leading, and is no longer active, as most of my own work was destroyed by the continuous violence I endured. The initiative emerged from the aim of translating cutting edge open technologies and best practices from highly specialized domains into practical tools capable of improving health, education, and protection outcomes for populations most in need, globally, with a focus on one health education. The action is open and free to join. Membership is required to apply for funding instruments, but registration carries no cost and no obligation beyond good faith participation. The current call for Short Term Scientific Missions is open to all registered members and includes both virtual and face to face formats through mobility agreements. These missions support targeted research, training, curriculum development, methodological work, and implementation activities in one health education, with funding of up to 4,000 euros per mission depending on scope and duration. Colleagues whose work aligns with the action roadmap are encouraged to apply and to circulate this invitation within their professional networks. Funds are available to all members affiliated to EU COST area institutions. We will keep on setting the grounds for winning consortia, with global partners, through the establishment of an excellence network able to thrive and improve our careers.

The action belongs to its members collectively. It operates under an ethical governance model formally adopted by the management committee and documented in the communication, dissemination, exploitation, and open governance plan. Leadership within the action is exercised through substantive contribution, responsible coordination, and documented delivery of results. Members are encouraged to take initiative within working groups, contribute to the development of a high functioning excellence network, and participate in the formation of competitive consortia capable of delivering high quality outputs and sustained impact. The shared objective is to meet and exceed the mandate of the action through best practices in research design, education, collaboration, and governance. Communication, both internal and external, is also the infrastructure that allows and facilitates connection. Technology sets and structures coordination of methods, improves the visibility and review of decisions, circulation of results, and accountability to participants and society. Disciplined communication practices support transparency, learning, reuse, and trust, and are necessary for collaboration at scale and for real world implementation of one health education outputs.

This communication constitutes the final notification shared through the laboratory notebook publication, which is now closed. The publication was created to address two operational requirements: it provided a continuous notification channel to inform colleagues of major developments related to shared work, reducing fragmentation and preserving continuity across institutions and countries, and; also supported sustained collaboration under conditions of isolation. Both functions were necessary at the time and were pursued at significant personal cost. These requirements remain central. The present transition focuses on delivering them through safer, collective, and institutionally durable means.

Experience across scientific and educational contexts demonstrates that openness, in the absence of governance and enforcement, does not ensure integrity or protection. Where accountability is weak, transparency can increase exposure for those who report problems, contribute evidence, or work in the public interest, while underlying systems remain unchanged. This dynamic undermines scientific quality and public trust. It also affects individuals and groups who collaborate in good faith, particularly where social position or dependency increases vulnerability. Establishing safe and accountable ground for collaboration is therefore a methodological requirement for responsible research and education.

Traditional academic environments have addressed these challenges through arrangements that have proven insufficient for preventing harm and ensuring accountability. Prioritization of institutional continuity over responsibility has enabled the persistence of coercive and abusive practices, particularly where reporting exposes individuals to risk without corresponding protection. These outcomes arise from structural configurations rather than isolated errors and therefore require systematic change in organization, governance, and operational practice. Participatory action research conducted under strict open science standards provides a methodologically robust and operationally necessary response to these conditions. Continuous reporting, transparent methods, shared data practices, and systematic return of results to society constitute core elements of rigorous research conducted in the public interest. Their effective implementation depends on adequate technical infrastructure, enforceable governance mechanisms, sustained institutional commitment, and explicit alignment with the rule of law.

In this context, the Open Science Commons Cloud (OSCC), a new shared international structure, is being developed, deployed, and iteratively refined as a shared technical and organizational infrastructure to support open science groups, action research networks, and research and education centers operating under conditions of risk, precarity, or institutional failure. The OSCC will soon provide secure, accountable environments for collaboration, documentation, communication, and dissemination, reducing individual exposure while preserving openness, reproducibility, and collective ownership of work. Its purpose is to enable high quality research and education without requiring personal vulnerability as the price of participation.

Effective protection also requires that law enforcement and related public systems are accurately informed, materially capable, and genuinely protective, so that reporting of harm does not generate further risk or retaliation, nor exposes us to further harm and betrayals of duty by deceitful and full criminals actors within the system. Preventing ineptitude, negligence, and corruption across academic, clinical, legal, and administrative domains is essential to closing pathways through which violence is normalized, authority is misused, and governance deteriorates into personal rule. Only under these conditions can scientific and educational institutions contribute reliably to prevention, lawful accountability, and durable public trust.

Democratic systems require active, informed participation by all members of society, and this depends on communication that is honest, open, and grounded in verifiable evidence. When access to information is limited, distorted, or mediated through fear, disinformation, or unaccountable authority, collective decision making weakens and responsibility becomes diffuse. Open science, applied with strict methodological standards, responds to this requirement by ensuring transparency of methods, accessibility of data, reproducibility of results, and continuous reporting back to society. The OSCC is being developed to operationalize these principles through shared, secure, and accountable infrastructure that supports collaboration while reducing individual exposure. In parallel, the work of the European COST Action CA24106 BEACON on one health education addresses these democratic foundations from early education onward, strengthening scientific literacy, ethical reasoning, and cross sectoral understanding across health, environment, and society.

Together, these efforts treat communication as civic infrastructure and education as a core democratic capacity, enabling societies to understand complex challenges, scrutinize power, and act collectively in the public interest.

The transition now underway is informed by direct experience of prolonged interpersonal violence and coercive deprivation, together with their well documented effects on human functioning. Extended exposure to repeated physical harm, chronic threat, and the enforced separation from one’s own children produces durable injury that reshapes perception of safety, capacity for trust, and ability to engage in social, professional, and institutional life. This experience provides empirical clarity regarding the conditions under which participation becomes possible or constrained. It establishes that safer ground, timely protection, and enforceable accountability are prerequisites for sustained collaboration and responsible knowledge production. Within a clinical framework, this pattern corresponds to complex post-traumatic stress disorder as defined in the ICD-11. In such cases, the condition develops following prolonged exposure to environments characterized by sustained threat, coercion, and deprivation, where escape or effective protection was structurally unavailable. The resulting injury affects autonomic regulation, chronic pain symptoms, emotional processing, and interpersonal functioning. Persistent hyperarousal, affective dysregulation, exhaustion, and somatic distress reduce cognitive availability and communicative capacity. Avoidance, shutdown, and blockage in response to interaction or administrative demands represent adaptive neurobiological responses to sustained threat, rather than voluntary choices or attitudinal dispositions.

These effects have direct implications for my academic and institutional work. At present, even routine administrative communication can trigger significant physiological distress, limiting functional capacity and sustained engagement. A period of medically indicated sabbatical leave is therefore being pursued, subject to clinical agreement, as a necessary measure to stabilize health, restore baseline functioning, and enable a full and effective return to professional responsibilities. This leave constitutes a justified interruption aimed at ensuring work can subsequently be carried out with the rigor, continuity, and responsibility it requires.

These constraints are relevant not as biographical detail, but as empirical evidence. They demonstrate how prolonged exposure to violence and subsequent institutional inaction impair the capacity of trained professionals to contribute to research, teaching, and collaboration. The resulting impact extends beyond the individual, affecting research continuity, institutional performance, and the broader communities and societies we serve, that depend on reliable, high quality scientific and educational work.

This position also highlights the responsibilities associated with academic work. Access to platforms, networks, and resources entails an obligation to report accurately, comprehensively, and with methodological rigor on the conditions that shape harm, protection, and accountability in contemporary societies. My work on coercive practices, including extrajudicial restraint, shackling, and related forms of domination framed as care, is grounded in this obligation. It documents how structural violence operates across domestic, clinical, and institutional domains, how procedural language normalizes harm, and how those most affected, including children and other dependent populations, bear disproportionate costs.

These efforts align with a long standing democratic imperative to improve institutions through truth, education, and shared responsibility. As John F. Kennedy stated in his 1963 Televised Address to the Nation on Civil Rights, we are confronted primarily with a moral issue, as old as the scriptures and as clear as our democratic constitutions. President Kennedy emphasized that change requires informed citizens, honest communication, and the willingness to act collectively to correct injustice rather than tolerate it. Those evils are nowadays as prevalent as before. More than six decades later, racism, structural exclusion, abuse of power, and normalized violence continue to undermine democratic life across our societies. The work now underway through stricter open science methods, shared infrastructure such as the OSCC, and sustained action on one health education from schools upward reflects this unfinished task. Democratic systems endure only when knowledge circulates openly, harms are named accurately, and education equips people to understand, question, and improve the conditions under which they live. These efforts are directed toward that ongoing betterment, grounded in evidence, accountability, and the shared obligation to confront injustices that still haunt us all.

The experiential and analytical grounding of this work is anchored in direct exposure to sustained aggression, severe marginalization, and social exclusion occurring in contexts marked by criminal conduct and institutional indifference. Such conditions obstruct academic work, undermine personal and professional stability, and permit harmful practices to persist without effective challenge. This grounding reinforces the necessity of participatory action research conducted under strict open science standards. Reporting must be continuous, transparent, and oriented toward the systematic return of knowledge to society, particularly to those most affected by violence, neglect, and institutional failure. Structural change depends on accurate documentation, enforceable accountability, and collective commitment to strengthening the systems that govern care, protection, and justice. From this perspective, the work now underway contributes to building societal capacity to prevent harm, protect vulnerable populations, and uphold the rule of law as a foundational condition for democratic life.

This understanding is inseparable from my research on coercive practices and from injuries sustained through direct exposure to such practices. Across contexts, harm is routinely reframed as care through medicalized and administrative narratives that relocate responsibility away from perpetrators and toward those subjected to violence. Within these frameworks, coercion is rendered acceptable as management, restraint is justified as protection, and deprivation is recast as treatment. This narrative transformation enables control to be exercised under professional authority while concealing the violent nature of the acts themselves.

Systems of care frequently operationalize these narratives through routine procedures. Coercive measures become embedded in standard practice, silence is interpreted as cooperation, and expressions of distress are pathologized as further evidence of disorder. Under such conditions, disclosure is discouraged, accountability is deferred, and harm is reproduced over time. For individuals subjected to prolonged coercion, these environments extend the original injury by reinforcing fear, helplessness, and loss of agency, while restricting access to meaningful protection and redress.

In these contexts, complex post-traumatic stress disorder constitutes an injury resulting from deliberate and sustained harm. Causality is external and cumulative. Responsibility resides with those who perpetrated the violence, with those who enabled it through omission or compliance, and with institutional systems that normalized and operationalized coercion. Recovery therefore depends on restoration of safety, agency, and enforceable legal protection against violence, coercive control, and extrajudicial punishment. Clinical care remains essential, yet it cannot substitute for prevention, effective law enforcement, accountability, and comprehensive victim support. Without these elements, therapeutic intervention risks being absorbed into the same structures that produced the injury.

The current transition responds directly to these findings. The development of structured communication, ethical governance, and durable infrastructure aims to reduce exposure, enable reporting without retaliation, and support participation under conditions of safety and accountability. These measures align scientific and educational practice with the rule of law and established human rights standards. This approach supports recovery at the individual level, accountability at the institutional level, and prevention at the societal level. It represents a collective responsibility and a methodological requirement for research and education conducted in the public interest.

Colleagues are invited to join the action, apply for the available funding instruments, and encourage participation from others whose expertise and commitment align with its objectives. Meaningful engagement in shaping priorities, governance arrangements, and implementation pathways remains essential to sustaining a high functioning and accountable network. In my current role, I remain available to welcome and support new members, particularly within the communication, dissemination, and exploitation group, where coordinated effort is critical to coherence, visibility, and societal uptake of results.

The work will continue, hopefully, unless criminals prevail or misfortune strikes, with a strengthened focus on methodological excellence, protection of contributors, reach across disciplines and contexts, and demonstrable impact in the public interest. The present venue created excessive exposure to bad actors; this transition is therefore necessary to pursue these goals responsibly and sustainably.

This transition acknowledges the cumulative impact of trauma and the non-negotiable need for economic sustainability -that of mine, my beloved ones, peers and of all other honest actors involved, as well as society-wide. Any future platform must incorporate effective constant checks, balance and filters, an effective system of governance, and safeguarding mechanisms that ensure competence and good faith, teach and bring up, prioritize those most in need, enabling them to reach safer professional positions while preserving their capacity to work. Equally essential is the systematic exclusion of bad actors whose conduct undermines trust, safety, and the integrity of research. Such system does not exist yet, as many others do, required for our basic professional and human needs -this poses both a challenge and an unique collective opportunity. The system is to be developed and implemented to improve open scientific methods of working together. The objective is focused, protected collaboration that allows necessary work to proceed responsibly, without exposing vulnerable contributors to further harm. I am working on it, as other do. I wish you all success in this and all your endeavours.

The open science notebook has been active for more than four years, spanning most of my doctoral period. During this time, I endured continuous physical violence, alongside systematic dispossession of health, income, and any realistic chance to develop away from the perpetrators. Threats, retaliation in response to attempts to obtain justice, and sustained harassment persisted throughout. Once harm was normalized, hostility spread, and additional actors joined in the abuse, amplifying its severity. A doctorate is widely recognized as intrinsically demanding. Under these conditions, imposed deliberately and sustained over time, the experience became a constant fight for survival. The losses incurred are irreversible. No mechanism exists to restore what was taken, nor to compensate for the damage inflicted, even if myself ever achieves law to be enforced. The damage to myself and my beloved ones, to the career that sustained us -as well as everyone who should had benefited from the ongoing work, society-wide- is too profound. The chances of doing good will never be brought back. Torture is the best way to put what I endured.

It is in this context, and after further betrayals that have clarified the limits of existing arrangements, that a new start is being undertaken. The Open Science Commons Cloud (OSCC) is a technical and organizational infrastructure currently under construction and scheduled for deployment in the coming weeks. It is introduced independently of prior institutional frameworks. Its purpose is practical: to provide a stable, accountable foundation for rigorous research, education, and international collaboration when established structures have failed to uphold their responsibilities.

This initiative arises from the experience of a COST action that was conceived, developed, and carried to success over more than three years of sustained work, bringing together a large, highly competent network of experts across countries and disciplines, addressing matters of substantial societal relevance. That achievement demonstrated what can be accomplished through methodological rigor, intellectual honesty, and sustained effort. What followed, however, was a debacle. Once leadership and operational responsibility shifted, the material foundations were allowed to disappear through neglect. Allowing core systems to vanish for want of a few tens of euros is not misfortune. It is a breach of duty, rendered particularly severe by the fact that this occurred while harsh fieldwork was being conducted abroad, during a period of only partial recovery from years of daily brutal physical violence, and after profound personal and economic damage had already been inflicted through the hypocrisy and inaction of those who should have intervened to prevent further crimes.

The significance of the OSCC therefore extends beyond infrastructure alone. It is intended to support the reconstruction of a genuinely excellent network, capable of operating globally and sustainably, devoted to the most stringent scientific methods, reproducibility, intellectual honesty, and disciplined hard work for the benefit of societies at large. Such networks cannot rely on declarations, reputational capital, or nominal funding alone. They require reliable technical environments, shared and secure working spaces, continuity of operations, and governance structures that enforce responsibility rather than reward opportunism or indifference.

From a technical standpoint, the platform is anchored in dedicated high performance infrastructure. At its core is an AMD EPYC 7532 system with 32 physical cores and 64 threads, supported by 128 GB of ECC memory, a combination of NVMe and high capacity HDD storage including 3.2 TB of NVMe for low latency workloads, and sustained 10 Gbps network connectivity with monthly transfer capacity in the tens of terabytes. By contemporary academic standards, this constitutes a small but serious computational facility. Its availability at modest cost underscores how unnecessary the earlier losses were, and how feasible continuity becomes when responsibility is taken seriously. We take it from here, with more prowess than before, starting anew.

The OSCC is being deployed under a new sustainability model, explicitly independent of previous arrangements and no longer reliant on the funds obtained through the COST framework, regrettably, nor any single income source. It is designed to avoid dependence on unpaid labor, personal financial exposure, or informal assurances. Governance is conceived to be open, transparent, democratic, and ethical, with clearly defined roles, traceable decision making, and financial clarity proportionate to the societal importance of the work being supported. Human capital, fostered. It is disparaging myself had to cover the costs of operation of an already funded COST action, awarded more than half million euros thanks to our honest work. The OSCC will remain independent, placing the strongest safeguards to avoid corruption and malfeasance. It be made available to students, researchers, and educators who lack access to reliable infrastructure, as well as to organizations working in research, education, and public interest domains. Its purpose is to lower structural barriers to participation in high quality scientific and educational work, particularly for those operating in constrained, precarious, or hostile environments. The platform is intended to support collaborative research, open educational resources, shared data practices, and cross border cooperation under conditions that respect methodological rigor, transparency, and ethical responsibility. In this sense, OSCC is not only a technical resource but an enabling environment for building and sustaining a truly excellent network devoted to honest work, reproducible science, and societal benefit, including continued efforts in one health education across disciplines and regions.

We will do our best to regain control of the action as well, to savage the opportunity to make a real difference through our hard earned EU funds. Alongside this efforts and all infrastructure work, I am also preparing a major international online event focused on health and environmental professionals who have faced reprisals, severe harassment, and violence, in different forms and degrees of severity. The aim is to provide a serious, evidence based space in which hundreds of speakers can document and analyze the brutality and cruelty that still prevail in many professional contexts, silencing honest work, destroying careers, and, in the most extreme cases, costing lives. The event is expected to take place online by the end of the year now beginning, or by mid 2027, and will seek to bring visibility, collective analysis, and professional solidarity to issues that remain widely denied or minimized despite their scale and impact. Ours lives are being destroyed with impunity, and with it the chances to speak about even harsher and more brutal crimes affecting our entire societies. We must stay together, prevail, build up strength and enforce true lawful competence from all in positions of responsibility.

Over the coming months, I will focus on rebuilding from safer and more stable ground, with the intention of sharing further updates and, I hope, good news in the next communication. It may not be possible, as we take it from a position of severe lack and vulnerability. I look forward to collaborating with competent, good willed professionals who remain committed to integrity, rigor, and mutual support. The contract entering its final phase was awarded through the FPU Formación de Profesorado Universitario program of the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades in 2020. It is one of the very few national schemes that fund doctoral training in Spain, and the only one designed to prepare future faculty through rigorous academic standards and structured pedagogic formation. This stage coincides with my first year as scientific communications coordinator of our European action, a role that requires sustained work on consortia formation, manuscript development, methodological refinement, advanced skills building and the continued development of the network I founded on a global scale. It also requires sustained effort in the search for a suitable academic appointment.

To meet these obligations, I will channel all outreach through syndicated media rather than this publication. This pause is necessary to concentrate on building the structures the network must rely on, while securing the conditions required for those close to me and for the broader societal aims that guide this work. The contract reaching its final phase was awarded through the FPU (Formación de Profesorado Universitario) professor in training program of the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades back in 2020, one of the very few national schemes that finance doctoral training in Spain and the only one conceived to prepare future faculty with rigorous academic standards. As you know, the violence and other harms endured over the years made advancement as difficult as it could be. That was already the context from which I began, long before receiving the award. These months are also required to ensure that due process is pursued to its conclusion, so that justice is finally secured and life can be lived with peace, stability and the conditions needed to prosper. This work is inseparable from the broader goal of helping to end such forms of mistreatment and any related abuses in our societies.

This period coincides with my first year responsibility as scientific communications coordinator of our European Union action, a role that requires sustained work on consortia formation, manuscript development, methodological refinement and continued skills enhancement, to take forward the network myself founded -global stage. It also demands sustained effort in the search for a suitable academic appointment. To meet these obligations, I will channel all outreach through syndicated media rather than this publication. This pause is necessary to focus on building the structures the network must rely on, while securing the conditions required for those close to me and for the broader societal aims that guide this work.

Today and tomorrow, I am preparing the slides for our action research network systems presentation for the sessions on Friday 5, Tuesday 8 and Friday 12, delivered through our own open source video-calling BBB deployment at https://tele.health.int.eu.org/done/deal/ . These presentations will introduce the unified infrastructure and must articulate clearly how the technical backbone supports all scientific, pedagogic and organisational aims of the action.

Please, join us in if interested. Following are some thoughts on the new video delving into the human factor and one health, and on the preparations this far, laying a very humble ground work allowing us all to keep on going a bit more ready to thrive.

The world faces acute scarcity, with millions of children experiencing hunger and limited access to education, and teachers overstretched in both low income regions and parts of the EU. Inequalities across the COST area demand a foundation that reaches the most under-served communities rather than relying on commercial systems designed for wealthy institutions. EU BEACON must deploy research grade open technologies capable of functioning under poverty, low bandwidth and institutional fragility, because only open, sovereign infrastructure can scale across diverse conditions. Open systems allow us to bring cutting edge tools to schools, clinics and community centers, enabling them to benefit from the same advanced capabilities used in top tier research. This way of working transform every euro into lasting capacity, creating local jobs and expertise rather than extracting value through licensing fees. Open foundations permit full auditability, continuous improvement, multilingual support and low cost adaptation for one health education and public health priorities. This mode of work ensure sovereignty over data, identity and pedagogy at a time when generative artificial intelligence and other very rapid technological change demand institutional control. By building on GNU Linux and other UNIX based systems, Nextcloud, BigBlueButton, Moodle and others, we place robust, non extractive digital infrastructure into the hands of those who most need it. This approach anchors the action’s responsibility to strengthen society, safeguard future generations and bridge the gap between advanced scientific capabilities and the everyday realities of schools and communities under strain.

With this, we are simply building on the backbone that already powers the World. GNU Linux and UNIX based systems, along with open databases, open programming languages and open orchestration frameworks, are what runs the global internet, the majority of cloud infrastructure, critical banking systems, streaming platforms, medical devices and scientific computing. Commercial services depend on these foundations even when users do not notice it, contributing to them because they cannot operate at scale without their stability and security. By aligning EU BEACON with this same foundation, we future proof the network, ensure compatibility with global standards and create a technological base that can evolve with emerging fields such as AI assisted learning, environmental monitoring and planetary health.

This strategy positions our action research network not as a consumer of technology, but as a contributor to the digital commons. It generates long term value for public institutions, strengthens European digital sovereignty, facilitates law enforcement, and guarantees that the world’s most advanced educational and public health tools remain open, adaptable and accessible to all. By doing so we act responsibly as a genuine excellence driven research network, ensuring that every resource at our disposal strengthens our capabilities, instead of being lost to commercial overhead, enabling us to reach our goals without compromise.

This approach allows us to move beyond constrained tool-sets, to develop bleeding edge technologies, pedagogic materials and public health infrastructures that remain fully under our control, and to lay down an impactful foundation that serves both our societies and our own long term scientific cohesion. Running the entire suite of open source scientific power tools that sustains our network -from real time conferencing to collaborative editing, secure storage, integrated identity, learning management and research grade extensions, and more to come- costs us barely 1200 euros per year in server infrastructure. This is a negligible amount when compared to the escalating licensing fees of commercial platforms, which would drain resources, restrict functionality and block the possibility of improving on the shared power tools. In contrast, our open and sovereign scientific stack offers capabilities that exceed consumer grade services while preserving full control, full extensibility and both commercial and publicly available pedagogic value for societal sustainability.

Marginalization and chronic lack of resources weaken not only individuals but entire systems across Europe and beyond. Many schools, clinics, universities and public administrations remain dependent on costly proprietary platforms that drain already scarce budgets, limit digital autonomy and push institutions into long term dependency on multinationals whose priorities do not align with public needs. This dependence locks organizations into expensive cycles of renewal, narrows their technological options and sets the bar permanently low, denying them the chance to build capacities that would allow real improvement. Research institutions themselves are often forced into consumer grade tools that are inadequate for scientific work, leaving them unable to innovate or share knowledge openly. In this environment, reclaiming technological power is not an abstract ideal but a practical necessity. Open, sovereign infrastructure gives our institutions, governments, schools and healthcare systems the means to act with agency rather than submission, to direct their own futures rather than renting access to someone else’s vision. It allows public actors to preserve their resources, build local expertise, protect their data and operate with the dignity and autonomy required to serve society effectively.

By committing to this path, we refuse to accept the structural weakness imposed by dependency and instead build the conditions for a stronger, fairer and more resilient future. We either reclaim our technological sovereignty now or continue bleeding resources into systems that hold us back. Children needs to learn how to master both the software and the hardware, as well as scientific and engineering methods to ensure prosperity. One health education cannot flourish atop fragile, commercial infrastructures that exclude those who most need protection. The human factor cannot be strengthened through tools that treat learners and communities as commodities. A healthy society demands technological foundations that serve every child, every school, every clinic, not just those who can pay. We either build systems that safeguard life, knowledge and dignity, or we perpetuate the conditions that erode them. We rather choose wisely the infrastructure that properly empowers humanity, rather than setting the stage for more dependency.

The EU BEACON coordination video calls focused on the unified infrastructure and roadmap will take place on 9 and 12 December at 10:00 CET (Madrid time), using the following link for access: https://tele.health.int.eu.org/done/deal/ . In parallel to these general sessions, I would like to propose an additional, smaller meeting specifically dedicated to those who are interested in working together on the long term sustainability of our individual and collective careers. This second set of calls will be arranged only with members who explicitly confirm their interest, so that we can work in a focused and practical way.

I would like to convene this complementary online brainstorming session later that month or early January, after the first EU BEACON calls, to concentrate on how to make each of our careers structurally sustainable while remaining fully dedicated to One Health education, well being and the end of abuses, starting from those most at risk. The aim is to reflect together, on a global scale, on how we can secure the conditions that allow us to continue this work with continuity, clarity of purpose and without chronic precarity. My proposal is that we explore, collectively and in detail, a wide spectrum of possibilities: new grants and fellowships, the creation of a workers cooperative or similar shared structure, the option of a B corporation, the establishment of a global foundation, and a portfolio of services and products that remain coherent with our ethics and mission. The space will also be open to any other model you consider relevant for consolidating long term livelihoods around this shared agenda.

The objective is twofold. First, to guarantee continuity for our common work well beyond 2029, so that what we are building does not dissolve when the current COST funding cycle ends. Second, to identify concrete mechanisms that can immediately strengthen those among us who are in more fragile situations, so that they can increase their income, stabilize their conditions and contribute from the strongest possible footing in the years ahead. Once I have the list of interested members, allies and anyone else willing, I will propose a set of dates and times to poll the best one, so that we can accommodate as many of us as possible. This initiative follows exactly what our action is mandated to deliver. The COST framework requires us to widen participation, reach those with the least access to educational resources, with the lowest salaries and with the most limited options to escape harmful environments and marginalization, and to create conditions where knowledge circulates across borders without obstruction. To do that in a serious way, we must recognize that precarious contracts, unpaid overload and exposure to toxic settings directly undermine our capacity to serve the people and territories most in need. Securing our own continuity and safety is not a secondary goal, it is a structural prerequisite to fulfill our mandate at global scale. We need a stable framework that goes beyond the current action, able to sustain one health work in the broad sense over decades, not just funding cycles. That means building a durable collective, cultivating allies who understand the value of our work, engaging institutions that rely on our expertise, securing robust partnerships and developing clients who provide fair compensation for the services, tools and knowledge we produce. It also requires reaching donors and funders committed to long term transformation, approaching governments that need evidence based guidance, and positioning ourselves where our contributions are recognized as essential rather than optional.

Only with this stronger base can we extend open courseware into places where infrastructure is fragile, create new power tools for learning, produce multilingual materials, tutor learners across continents, support teachers, train researchers, mentor professionals, design community based programmes, offer online and in person courses, reinforce schools with scarce capacity, accompany early career colleagues, assemble evidence for local authorities, translate specialized knowledge into accessible formats, establish open science hubs, map needs in vulnerable areas, form remote academies, strengthen digital platforms, generate analytical briefings, advise organizations and support those working in the harshest social and ecological contexts. A unified and durable structure amplifies our reach and allows us to position one health education where it is most urgently required, while also ensuring that no member of this network is forced to remain in abusive situations or chronic insecurity to continue contributing. We must find ways to strengthen the path forward. Please, propose any idea. Let’s get working on achieving our mandate.

To introduce the action roadmaps and the new integrated systems, two online meetings will take place on the 9th and 12th of December at 10 AM CET Madrid time. These sessions will explain how coordination, research, pedagogic development and implementation will be structured across the network, and how the tools now available will support the scientific, educational and governance work expected from us. A unified digital environment has been deployed to support this collective endeavour, ensuring that every member can reach the same materials, collaborate transparently and contribute to the production of open course ware in a coherent and reliable manner. Nextcloud provides an integrated workspace where storage, editing, scheduling and coordination operate in one place under our direct governance. It centralises documents, calendars, shared folders, templates, task boards and real time collaborative writing through Collabora. This removes dependence on external providers, ensures compliance with European data protection requirements and keeps all materials persistent and accessible to every member of the action. Workflows become clearer, since drafts, reviews, curricular materials and administrative documents remain organised, versioned and traceable. It strengthens governance by offering unified spaces for planning, role assignment and progress monitoring through calendars, Gantt structures and Kanban boards.

BigBlueButton adds a specialised communication layer focused on education and scientific collaboration. It delivers videoconferencing with breakout rooms, polls, shared notes, whiteboards, screen sharing and session recording stored in the same environment. Its integration with Nextcloud avoids platform fragmentation and keeps every meeting within our infrastructure.

In combination, both systems give the action a coherent digital backbone. They enable secure teamwork, standardised procedures, documented outputs and coordinated participation across the full geographic spread of the network, while maintaining full control over data, continuity and long term scientific and educational reliability. Both systems integrate cleanly with Moodle and other open source pedagogic platforms, allowing us to develop, test and deliver the open courseware the action must generate. Nextcloud supplies the shared authoring environment where curricula, lesson plans and evaluation instruments are drafted, while Moodle and related tools provide structured learning spaces for pilots, comparative evaluations and classroom deployment. BigBlueButton embeds directly into Moodle, enabling live teaching, workshops and demonstrations without leaving the platform. This coherence allows the action research network to build a unified educational pipeline where materials are conceived, refined, taught and assessed across countries in a consistent and reproducible manner.

All members are encouraged to sign in. Each participant must have now received an email enabling them to set their personal password. A single unified credential will serve for every component of the EU BEACON infrastructure, present and future. This approach reduces friction, avoids duplicate accounts and keeps the entire ecosystem more secure and easier to operate. For a European and COST area wide network committed to open science, it ensures transparent access, controlled governance and stable continuity. It raises our operational standard by aligning every tool with the same identity layer, strengthening collaboration, increasing reproducibility and preserving long term integrity across the full breadth of our shared work. Open science rests on transparency, accessibility and verifiability. It means that knowledge, methods and outputs are shared transparently, remaining available for scrutiny, reuse and improvement rather than confined to closed systems. This principle strengthens scientific reliability and accelerates progress, since results can be reproduced, compared and expanded by any qualified group. It also aligns with the ethical obligations of publicly funded work, ensuring that insights and tools generated through collective effort remain accessible to all stakeholders.

We rely on open source because it offers full control over the tools we use while allowing technical inspection, adaptation and long term preservation. These platforms do not lock us into corporate policies, shifting pricing structures or opaque data handling. They allow the network to maintain sovereignty over sensitive educational and scientific materials, scale the infrastructure as required and integrate components as needed. Beyond software, the same logic extends to our outputs in the form of open course ware. Teaching materials, curricula, evaluations and methodological guidelines become resources that others can adopt, adapt and improve, creating a cumulative effect.

All members are kindly requested to follow these standards and adopt the shared infrastructure as the central environment for organising work, developing documents, coordinating tasks, managing calendars and maintaining internal communication. It all will be further presented, and migration further facilitated, during the video calls and next posts. Using the same space ensures coherence, reduces fragmentation and allows every contribution to be visible, traceable and aligned with the action objectives. This unified approach strengthens our collective capacity, supports rigorous scientific and educational output and provides the stability required for effective collaboration across the entire network.

This model maximises impact because it transforms the action into a generator of shared capacity rather than a closed unit producing isolated deliverables. Once materials and tools are openly available, implementation across the COST area becomes easier, faster and more consistent. Collaborative refinement by educators, researchers and institutions leads to iterations that strengthen quality and relevance. Over time, this approach builds a living system where improvements continue beyond the duration of the mandate, expanding the reach of our work and deepening its influence across the educational and scientific landscape.

The action Nextcloud platform will be populated over the coming days with tasks, calendars, working group documents, templates and all materials required for coordinated work. By Sunday or Monday a further update will be posted in the media kit, including a new video and complementary resources, together with news on the media campaign and the announcement of the finalised new website. This will complete the initial communication layer and provide a clear entry point for all members to follow developments and participate in the shared activities.

After two or three days of rest, hopefully devoted to sleep and barely anything else, the focus will return to integration and improvement, bringing the strict necessary. I will connect the pedagogical environments, the computational pipelines for the expert tutor carer system, and the API layer that will automate the publication of funding opportunities, calls for publications, conferences, and events from all major and minor providers. The system will operate as a single coherent environment, limiting semi automation and enabling contributions to flow directly into shared workflows. The workload is considerable, but it will be cleared step by step. The outcome will be a collective accomplishment, supported by the action budget and, with grit and audacity, by external donors who can help accelerate completion. The benefits will return to our institutions. The action is designed to coordinate a network of excellence, not to generate profit or empower particular groups. This requires a governance structure, clear publishing criteria, operational protocols, and guiding principles, all based in the most stringent open science and one health standards, goals and values. By then I will also clear my inbox systematically with technological support. This will take about a week after this deployment round, now being finalized. I apologize for the delay in advancing the network agenda. The aim is to establish the foundations for a large scale participatory action research network, thousands to tens of thousands strong, capable of achieving all objectives on schedule and remaining sustainable well beyond 2029 -work is already ongoing to achieve and ensure so, for us all. This action needs to create employment and prosperity, as much as delivering all other goals.

The first meeting will present the road maps, most likely by mid December. We will set a poll to collectively decide the best fitting day and time. Beforehand, everyone is invited to provide feedback and proposals, as well as questions. Our BBB connects to our own Youtube channel, for live streaming and archiving of all meetings. One of the next moves will be to switch from Substack to a Ghost instance, allowing to also post automatically to our publication. Once individual credentials are issued today and tomorrow at last, please use the full system to contribute, propose, and advance together as needed. We will rebuild the momentum lost this way,also with the media campaign and a thorough network expansion to cover in depth all COST countries. We will resume all halted work, while initiating the new lines already planned. The action objectives remain clearly defined and scheduled, and all components will be integrated seamlessly into the website. This weekend is dedicated to this final integration. I am working on templates to ease the proposals and all work to be done, all shared at our Nextcloud instance. I remind you that we have a lovely full office suite, Collabora, integrated already. Way more improvements are on the way.

Delays have been caused by lack of funds that endanger the payment of the action servers in itself, regretfully still fronted by myself despite being at the verge of bankruptcy due to the torture endured, and being in need to both save and get back on our feet by having money to pay lawyers instead. The damaging behaviours that continues to undermine scientific and educational work. Please, feel free to denounce all acts of aggression against you and your centers or beloved ones. This network is set to protect each other, uplift our careers, ensuring excellence also by protecting the conditions that allow us to be in working order, free from harm.

By Sunday we will release a new video, launch the next media wave, and open the renewed membership call. The website will be updated. The network of excellence will expand again, welcoming new participants on equal terms, since this is an entirely horizontal structure. We need the strongest capacities, regardless of discipline, age, seniority, or institutional status. We must reach those in greatest need. The action mandate is to ensure one health education, enabling stronger pathways for every child, future parent, educator, and professional. Social conditions belong to one health, and the action is structured to improve them accordingly.

It shows that the constructive side, once properly cultivated, can end suffering, halt destruction, restore what has been damaged, and prevent future harm. It summarizes how historical patterns of domination, violence, and systemic misconduct have undermined human development, not due to lack of intelligence or technology, but due to failures of responsibility and tolerance of harm. It explains how ecological systems and human physiology operate within strict limits and how degradation of soils, waters, climate stability, microbial diversity, and social trust leads directly to loss of life, impaired cognition, chronic illness, and economic decline.

It describes how corruption and criminal behaviour within institutions responsible for safety and education lead to measurable mortality and morbidity. It underlines that science offers tools to monitor change, strengthen prevention, and support vulnerable groups, but only if coupled with ethical governance. It highlights that technology without ethical oversight amplifies inequality and risk. It stresses that early disadvantage compounds across the lifespan and that protection of ecosystems is essential for human survival.

The video shows that small groups with harmful intent can inflict large scale damage, while coordinated integrity can generate extensive positive outcomes. It argues that current technological capacity offers a critical window for repair, and that failure to act will produce irreversible decline. It concludes that coordinated action across research, education, public administration, and community networks is required, under ethical governance and scientific clarity. It calls for contributions to protect life, restore balance, and rebuild systems across all nations.

The final message is a call to join the effort, strengthen the systems that guard life, support the missions that restore justice and ecological balance, and help build a future where scientific integrity and ethical responsibility guide human progress. The sequels of the years of physical abuse are obvious: back pain, debilitating headaches, and the lack of resources, as we have not yet had the chance to get back on our feet. Tomorrow I will hopefully finalize the website and the rest of pending tasks, including the sending of all account credentials -proud we are more than half thousand members. The biosphere is entering a period of accelerated destabilisation. Every scientific assessment confirms that ecological decline is driven by human decisions, not natural cycles. Forests are being removed faster than they regenerate. Soil fertility is collapsing under chemical overload, erosion and repeated extraction disregarding the hidden obvious costs, by many of us still allowing the worse, as if others' own death and carnage, weakening, despair, had to be the byproduct and side juggle of anyone. Never ending, one providing half the will and structures needed to enforce law and stop the ongoing butcheries, all pandemonium. Rivers and aquifers carry industrial toxins, microplastics and pathogens that impair agriculture, neurological development and immune function. Oceans disregulate, heat up, acidify and lose oxygen, all caused by us, destroying, altering, entire food systems. Climatic extremes intensify. Heat waves kill outright and silently damage cardiovascular and renal systems. Floods erase communities. Droughts limit food production and force displacement. These are not distant risks. They shape the daily environments of children throughout the EU COST region and beyond.

Human biology is sensitive to these pressures. Prenatal exposure to pollutants alters brain development. Childhood exposure to particulate matter reduces lung capacity and increases lifetime mortality. Endocrine disruptors interfere with growth and metabolism. Chronic malnutrition limits cognitive ability and increases susceptibility to disease. Environmental stress activates chronic inflammatory states that degrade health over decades. These outcomes are recorded in epidemiological datasets. They are predictable, measurable and reversible only if the conditions that produce them are corrected. Health depends on environmental integrity. Environmental integrity depends on governance. Governance depends on education and participation. These links define the scope of one health.

The material conditions of communities across the COST region reflect these failures. Water systems have been left vulnerable to contamination through neglected infrastructure and insufficient oversight. Agricultural regions struggle with soil degradation and nutrient imbalance. Urban districts accumulate heat and air pollution that harm infants and the elderly. Schools operate without adequate ventilation, thermal control or humidity regulation. Hospitals absorb preventable disease burdens caused by environmental exposure. Public health agencies monitor crises rather than prevent them. Data gaps obscure early warnings. Institutional inertia delays response. These failures compound the burden on families, educators, clinicians, administrators and researchers. They are structural and correctable through scientific coordination.

The action is designed to build the systems that should have existed decades ago. Monitoring platforms will be deployed across schools, municipalities and key institutions to track air quality, water safety, soil health, structural integrity, disease patterns and climatic indicators. Open data formats will allow every participating country to integrate findings. Local researchers, educators and environmental specialists will interpret and validate results. Children will learn directly from truthful measurements of their environments. Teachers will have access to tools that support scientific literacy. Communities will gain the means to recognize risks and demand intervention. Governments will receive actionable data instead of fragmented reports. This operational coherence is essential for protection.

Children are the primary focus because they absorb the greatest harm and possess the greatest potential for recovery if conditions improve. Their physiology is vulnerable to neurotoxicants, food insecurity, heat exposure and chronic stress. Their education is disrupted by instability. Their future health is shaped by exposures during growth. Every scientific field confirms this. When children grow in safe and informed environments their cognitive capacity, emotional stability and social competence increase. When conditions are degraded their potential collapses. The same holds for communities and nations.

The action positions children not as passive beneficiaries but as active contributors. Educational systems will integrate open tools that allow learners to document environmental indicators, interpret scientific results and build competency through participation in collective work. These skills form a foundation for advanced learning in health, engineering, ecology, computing and civic responsibility. Schools become centres of observation, analysis and cooperation. Teachers become facilitators of scientific practice. Students build portfolios that demonstrate real contributions. Local communities gain access to trained youth who understand their environment and can act with the planning and precision long required. Now, on us, to act it properly. Be as strong as humanly possible, delivering on all that was required from us in this action and the rest of our work, our lives, each of our endeavours.

This infrastructure requires constant improvement. Knowledge based systems will be installed within the upcoming week to support natural language processing, pedagogic applications, content generation and research queries. All APIs and integrations required for mapping, documentation, repositories and roadmap coordination will be prepared. Members will be able to propose tools, upload content, connect datasets and develop new applications through the shared platforms. Each contribution will be traceable, auditable and expandable through open source protocols. This is a cumulative system. It grows as members use it.

The crisis affecting children does not permit delay. Death, disease, stunting, displacement and institutional neglect impose immediate and long term harm. These harms are the direct consequence of inaction, also of our action failing miserably if, by not doing what it took, fragmentation and misaligned governance. They are reversible only if the systems that produce them are replaced with systems guided by scientific truth, public duty, full transparency and open participation. The action is structured to achieve this replacement. It requires every member to participate, invite others, share the mission widely and bring expertise from across sectors.

This is a vital undertaking, essential among the most urgent for humankind at this stage and state of collective disrepair and disrespect, despite the needs of all and, specially, the most in need and endangered by this collapse by design, by leashing out the worse in each one of who allows and forces against them and all other. The work must expand early, reach all COST countries rapidly and establish a durable foundation for the years ahead. Every institution, government, university, organization and local community is invited to participate. Please share this update, invite colleagues, mobilize networks and contribute proposals for missions and roadmap tasks. The next outputs will guide the remaining steps.

The systems required to stabilize the biosphere, protect children and restore the foundations of human societies must be built with exactitude because the conditions they are meant to correct were created through profound moral collapse, not through natural limits. On a planet where resources, knowledge and tools are abundant enough to safeguard every life, the persistence of harm reflects the normalization of exploitation, the endurance of practices rooted in enslavement and the tolerance of behaviours that treat human beings as expendable. The killing of principled individuals, the systematic obstruction of those attempting to protect others and the deprivation imposed on children who inherit nothing but violence, hunger and contaminated environments arise from institutions that have abandoned foresight, decency and responsibility.

Precision is required because the failures we confront are deliberate. They arise from actors who profit from chaos, from systems built to obscure responsibility, from governance structures shaped by hostility rather than care, from educational environments stripped of values, truth and science, and from the silencing of those who attempt correction. Children are denied the conditions essential to growth because adults permit brutality to pass for authority. Communities are weakened because societies tolerate the absence of the most basic ethical principles. Foresight has been replaced by short term gain. Opportunity has been replaced by exclusion. Life has been treated as disposable.

Restoring stability requires systems that leave no margin for these failures. Environmental monitoring must be precise so that no community remains unprotected. Health surveillance must be continuous so that no child is left to deteriorate unnoticed. Education must be grounded in evidence, responsibility and cooperation so that future generations are capable of sustaining what is built. Technology must be aligned with protection, not exploitation. Governance must operate transparently so that corruption and abuse cannot survive.

This work must advance on Earth, where the most basic duties remain unmet, as well as in the emerging space of human expansion, including future lunar outposts that will rely entirely on integrity, coordination and scientific discipline. The lessons learned from these new environments reinforce what should already have been universal: human survival depends on systems built with accuracy, honesty and shared responsibility. The action is directed toward rebuilding these foundations, at the EU level, the entire EU COST area, and third allied countries, hoping to reach soon to planetary scale. Our, your work, is urgently needed, and will be rewarded to the best of the entire network and action capabilities, growing stronger. Financed, or at least shared wide openly, disseminated and kudoed in detail, depth and breath to the extent required, willed and needed. Environmental science, public health, pedagogy, engineering, medicine, democratic social governance and technological development are integrated into one operational field because fragmentation has failed and will fail again. Each component secures the others. None can exist alone, unprotected, in any system set to achieve well-being to all. Health, prosperity, the task at hand, all ready and willing to contribute in.

This is the level of precision required to protect every life and to reverse the damage caused by decades of neglect, cruelty and institutional betrayal, tragically here down to Earth, to reconnect a World that was never this close to an understanding. None of us forces a believe system on an ancient golden axe, nor such age to hold as better but the future, for our children. All, on proper life support systems, where life if void of reason unless all works, as here. Fellow us, Earthlings, soon abroad. Moon bases, not for the detriment of who. All of us, for the shared joy to be alive and achieving. Education needs to uphold our legal systems. End the criminality inside, rotting it all, and every loophole in the wording, implementation and biocultural control systems.

Prison, shame, brutal force, precision on the ends that are urgently required and still lacking on mostly punitive and unjust mileaus, silos of hatred against each other and marginalized, target populations, because evil, criminals, accomplices, the indifferent ones, adapt when institutions fail to intervene. On Earth the destructive behaviours inherited from older eras have been permitted to persist behind uniforms, bureaucracies, cultural norms and political structures that excuse harm rather than correct it. These behaviours degrade environmental systems, destabilize communities and strip children of the conditions necessary for healthy development. The resulting damage accumulates across generations. Contaminated water reshapes bodies. Chronic stress rewires cognition. Hunger alters growth. Violence fractures identity. Neglect corrodes entire futures. These outcomes are measurable and preventable, yet they are allowed to continue because societies tolerate corrupted systems that normalize indifference.

A functioning society requires more than resources or technology. It requires a moral and educational framework capable of detecting harm early, addressing it immediately and preventing its repetition. Environmental stability requires governance grounded in evidence, not rhetoric. Public health requires institutions that enforce protections impartially. Childhood development requires environments that are clean, safe and free from predation. None of this can be improvised or left to chance. The precision demanded in space habitats is equally necessary on Earth because life depends on narrow margins. Air quality, water purity, food safety, structural integrity and biological resilience operate within defined thresholds. When these thresholds are breached, harm becomes inevitable.

The same scientific discipline required to sustain life in closed systems must now be applied to the open systems of Earth, where collapse is slower but far more widespread. Ecological disruption has pushed entire regions beyond their adaptive capacity. Health inequities have entrenched cycles of suffering. Education has been hollowed out by misinformation, coercion and the absence of stable environments. Governance has been undermined by actors who treat power as immunity. These failures converge into a single trajectory: the erosion of human potential at scale.

Correction requires systems that cannot be overridden by neglect or exploitation. Open data infrastructures must allow continuous environmental and epidemiological monitoring. Educational systems must be rebuilt around scientific literacy, civic responsibility and cooperative behaviour. Legal structures must enforce protections without bias. Technologies must interoperate to allow rapid detection, coordinated response and transparent evaluation. Public institutions must regain legitimacy by acting with impartiality, accountability and consistency.

This action is constructed to deliver such systems. Its approach combines open science, open technology, coordinated governance and a commitment to the children whose futures rely on the decisions made now. It mobilises educators, researchers, engineers, clinicians and community members across the COST region. Its work strengthens the societal functions that protect life. It all depends on broad participation, scientific rigor and sustained cooperation. Every contribution reinforces the foundation required for collective recovery.

Environmental integrity requires engineering solutions grounded in open standards. Air quality sensors must be calibrated, deployed and networked across regions so that particulate concentrations, chemical signatures and temperature profiles are measured continuously. Water systems require pathogen detection, chemical assays, conductivity measurements, turbidity tracking and structural monitoring of pipes, reservoirs and treatment stations. Soil systems require nutrient mapping, contaminant quantification, moisture analysis and erosion modelling. Built environments require assessments of ventilation, humidity, thermal loads, noise exposure and structural strain. Every dataset must flow into common formats to ensure interoperability.

Health stability requires surveillance systems capable of detecting outbreaks, injury patterns and chronic exposure effects before they escalate. Paediatric indicators are central, including growth metrics, respiratory function, metabolic markers, mental health signals and acute symptom clusters. Health services require transparent reporting systems that connect clinical observations to environmental data. Epidemiological modelling requires access to real time inputs to issue early warnings. Research institutions require open datasets to study trends and propose corrective interventions. These systems must be embedded in schools, clinics and local agencies so that protection begins where risk emerges.

Education must anchor these systems. Children require curricula that explain environmental processes, health principles, civic responsibility, technological tools and cooperative practice. They require learning environments that model the structures they are meant to inherit. Teachers require training, protection and resources. Schools must become active contributors to monitoring networks, producing validated observations that feed regional systems. Pedagogic platforms will be deployed through open source tools such as Moodle, upgraded and customised for multi linguistic use, accessibility for students with special needs and integration with scientific datasets. Children will learn scientific method through direct participation in environmental and health surveillance. These competencies will grow into research, engineering and community leadership roles.

Technological capacity must be built with open source ecosystems. The action invests its resources in open tools because they enable auditing, improvement and long term sustainability. Chat based platforms, mapping systems, knowledge engines, databases, modelling frameworks, documentation tools, educational software and communication systems must all be open. Proprietary systems cannot serve public health because they conceal the mechanisms by which decisions are made. Open tools allow COST countries, partner institutions and student contributors to inspect code, improve functionality, correct errors, connect to new datasets and adapt systems to local needs. This is essential for scaling.

Governance must be democratic in structure and scientific in operation. Decision making must be transparent, documented and tied to evidence. Working groups must remain open for participation from all members. National and local structures must develop in parallel so that responsibilities are distributed rather than centralised. Institutions must be accountable to the data they produce. Communities must hold decision makers to the standards set by the action. Only through distributed responsibility can corruption, delay and institutional paralysis be prevented.

The economic and institutional waste produced by fragmented data, incompatible systems and closed architectures has damaged public health, environmental quality and social cohesion for decades. This action corrects that failure by establishing stacking standards, interoperable systems, shared repositories and a culture of cumulative improvement. Proposals for coordinated missions will be funded through COST mechanisms in the first half of next year. Additional funding will be pursued through allies, governments, foundations, scientific networks and private actors committed to public interest. Sustainability requires expanding the resource base and diversifying contributors.

Children stand at the centre of this work. Their health, safety and cognitive development determine the future of every institution. Technologies deployed in schools are instruments of protection and learning. Curricula developed through this action are instruments of clarity. Monitoring systems are instruments of safety. Governance structures are instruments of stability. When these systems function together, children gain the conditions required for full development. Their families gain security. Their institutions gain legitimacy. Their societies gain resilience.

All members are asked to participate actively. Please develop proposals, organise local groups, share resources, invite colleagues, involve students and expand the network. The success of this work depends on early mobilisation, broad coordination and shared responsibility. Myself is the communications, dissemination and exploitation officer, our COST action coordinator, and will focus on the human factor consortium creation on ending torture and killings in the name of health, medicine, the common good and sense, from my individual member capacity, continuing the ongoing work done until now on mental health and shackling.

My own work barely started, on shackling in Indonesia, must be situated within this very same scientific, ethical and operational logic that drives the action. This is not an isolated practice targeting a flawed bunch as if all genetic in nature, as the current main canon keeps on repeating itself, nor a local only sociocultural phenomenon. It reflects structural failures in governance, public health, education, social protection and mental health systems Worldwide, and deeper, more harshly entrenched, both human and civilization flaws lodged in pain against target populations set to be at pain and blame, shame, guilt, punished and dispossessed of every right, property and opportunity for a legal fair trail. It emerges when families are abandoned, when services are absent or inaccessible, when stigma replaces care, when violence is tolerated and when institutions withdraw from their responsibilities. Our research needs to be documenting these dynamics with precision, without the blinders of any tradition and emic so-called explanation -both from science and medical fields, and the communities themselves. The pending literature reviews are essential for establishing a comprehensive evidence base on the mechanisms that sustain pasung, the harms it produces and the pathways to effective intervention.

The work myself is undertaking in Indonesia, the first action third country, is in need to provide a multidimensional understanding of confinement practices, as well as other forms of deceitful, punitive, coercive control and destruction of fellow human beings. It connects anthropological analysis with clinical realities, public health indicators and governance failures. Enslavement, sexual and otherwise. Meat to be set aside, destroyed. Illnesses of despair. The ill willed and feeble minded as well, since we are dealing with atrocities to set sooner than later to the trash bin of, from all of us, medical history -since that is the main defamatory excuse to deflect any responsibility, the pretext, excuse, frame, alibi, for the torture and killings in this one health particular context. Humans deprived of all rights, as if reason lacking. It is they all, those dehumanized as if barely brutes, the perpetrators and our entire societies, in need of much better. Criminals in between the victims, all a disastrous mix. These reviews will synthesize epidemiological data on psychiatric morbidity, medical and criminal records of perpetrators and victims -if any, along with case proceedings, case law, sorts of dispute-, environmental stressors, poverty cycles, family burden, health system gaps, human rights violations and community responses, as well as the ways new technologies, implementation, accessibility infrastructure and other ways to be at the preventive more safely for all, are to be put forward. The work merges with other ongoing actions at EU COST level and other allies, also examining how institutional weakness reinforce reliance on informal or coercive mechanisms of criminal control, in societies as Indonesia and our European Union, where the slightest forms of abuse are already criminalized. Torture, deaths, to be prevented, still normalized and, sadly, that degree common in both sets of lands and elsewhere. Law itself is abused, as much as medicine. Both weaponized in the hands of criminals, as much as everything else once corrupted by them. This body of work is required to design interventions that are scientifically grounded and socially viable. It will keep informing policy recommendations, service delivery models, preventive strategies and educational tools. Our plan is to resume this research once the first and second deployment rounds are stabilised aligns with the action’s operational logic, in a couple of weeks time, after my own doctoral work defense.

The infrastructure now being finalized is designed precisely to free your time and that of our allies, work efficiently and effectively, democratically, and to distribute responsibility across a flattened network without the ad hoc hierarchies forced by the EU COST structure on us once. Soon, the expert system, the knowledge base, the governance tools, the collaborative platforms and the communication channels will all be fully functional. By then, the collective work needs to be already advancing without depending on any single individual, as it has always been the case, despite this one major bottleneck we faced, now to be cleared with this big earning. The new network infrastructure allows us to return to the literature reviews, syntheses and comparative analyses, roadmaps, open source developments and deployments in any and all centers wishing, that only a stronger, growing network could ever produce.

The expert system to be will continue this work in a most impactful fashion. It will allow systematic extraction of data from documents, classification of literature, thematic coding, synthesis across disciplines, generation of annotated bibliographies and identification of missing evidence. The shared repositories will allow other members to contribute sources, comment on drafts, add regional data and integrate findings into the broader one health framework. This ensures that the research on pasung becomes collaborative, cumulative and actionable across multiple countries.

The ongoing work analyses, all protocols, methods, plans, software code, raw and processed data to best inter-operational standards, results, course-ware, feedback will feed directly into the action's objectives, as soon as we set this work in motion properly. Our action needs to be informing governments at large, as much as training programmes for teachers, clinicians, community workers, other organizations and the main multinational bodies -minor and mayor- at work in these topics. They will guide policy briefings for governments and international organisations. They will expand understanding of how severe social and institutional breakdown manifests in everyday life. They will contribute to the scientific tools the action produces for preventing harm, strengthening systems and protecting vulnerable populations.

Once these first two rounds of deployment are complete, our work resumes not as an isolated research task but as a central component of our collective roadmap. It documents the human consequences of institutional collapse and offers the evidence required to build systems that prevent such harm. It strengthens the shared mission. It advances the scientific basis for intervention. It ensures that the action delivers on its commitments to protect children, support communities and rebuild capacity where it has been lost. Our return to this research is essential, and the infrastructure being deployed now is meant to secure the continuity, depth and collaborative strength that work requires

The work now requires alignment across all sectors, institutions and communities. States and societies exist to prevent harm and to secure the conditions that allow people to develop fully. When children live with preventable contamination, hunger, violence, educational failure and institutional neglect, legitimacy collapses. Every preventable injury is a measurable governance failure. Every unaddressed exposure, every unmonitored hazard, every ignored warning reflects systemic delinquency. No country can claim stability while its youngest members grow inside environments that degrade their health, cognition and safety.

The hidden costs of institutional inaction are vast. Early death, chronic illness, impaired neurodevelopment, reduced working capacity, long term disability, unaddressed trauma, weakened immune systems, increased susceptibility to disease, reduced educational attainment and diminished social cohesion accumulate across generations. Families absorb losses that should have been prevented. Health systems strain under burdens that should have been intercepted upstream. Economies lose productivity, innovation, stability and human capital. Communities lose trust. Societies lose their most valuable asset: the children who would have contributed to collective wellbeing.

Rebuilding requires strict, continuous enforcement of environmental, health and child protection laws. Monitoring systems must trigger immediate action when thresholds are crossed. Institutions must respond at the first sign of danger. No violation can be dismissed. No exposure can be ignored. No child’s safety can depend on discretionary judgement by actors who previously failed to act. The scientific and technological tools already exist to detect risks early, prevent damage and protect populations. They must be deployed everywhere.

Education must anchor the reconstruction. Children must learn how ecosystems function, how disease spreads, how institutions work, how evidence is evaluated, how cooperation supports stability and how responsibility protects communities. Adults must relearn the fundamentals lost through decades of misinformation and neglect. Schools must become centres of truth and practice. Universities must become engines of research, engineering, environmental management and public health. Training programmes must produce professionals capable of building, maintaining and improving the systems used to safeguard populations.

Leadership must come from people with the competence, clarity and integrity needed to ensure that protection is continuous. Expertise must be drawn from science, engineering, healthcare, education, environmental fields, social work, law and community practice. People who have experienced the consequences of institutional collapse are essential to designing systems that prevent recurrence. Their insight corrects blind spots and strengthens decision making.

The action must grow rapidly. Every COST country requires national and local working groups. Every working group requires active members. Every commission requires proposals. Every proposal requires scientific grounding, clear objectives and shared responsibility. Funding from COST will support coordinated missions beginning next year. Additional resources will be secured through partnerships with governments, academic institutions, global health networks, environmental consortia, philanthropic organizations and public interest actors. The long term goal is a sustainable ecosystem of open science, open technology and open governance capable of supporting entire populations.

The children who inherit the Anthropocene require systems that protect them, educate them and allow them to contribute. Their lives depend on air that nourishes rather than poisons, water that strengthens rather than sickens, food that supports growth, schools that protect rather than endanger and institutions that act rather than hide. These conditions must be built with precision and urgency. They determine whether societies stabilise or fracture.

The work expands through the addition of new servers, repositories, and analytical systems, all compliant with open-source and legal standards. Each new layer increases the capacity of the network to act in accordance with truth, justice, and shared humanity. The action functions as a living system of science and education that operates through law, equality, and verifiable fact. It serves the public good through transparency, collaboration, and the full protection of human rights.

Executive summary: this post presents one of the first community pilot experiences currently underway in Spain to apply the provisions of the forthcoming Dependency Law, which updates national frameworks on personal autonomy, inclusion and accessibility. The law revises the General Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the 2006 Dependency Act to strengthen support for independent living and the right to choose one’s care environment. The project establishes a home care and support model in five ordinary residences in the Guanarteme area of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Fifteen individuals with moderate to severe dependency, including older adults, people with disabilities and women in vulnerable situations, will live in adapted dwellings equipped with assistive technologies, home automation and non-intrusive monitoring systems.

The model combines personalized physical, mental and social care with full user control over individual life plans. Early evaluations indicate a significant reduction in healthcare costs and improved autonomy, while preventing institutional confinement. The initiative will be assessed by regional social authorities and the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, generating a technical and economic guide for its replication across the archipelago by 2027.

This pilot positions EU BEACON’s colleague Cayetano Santana Gil, his foundation and the entire Canary Islands at the forefront of Spain’s transition toward community-based and technology-enabled health and social services, longevity oriented, that respect autonomy, inclusion and quality of life through the entire human lifespan.

Villa Longenia is an ongoing work of the Fundación Canaria ALCASIV, a non-profit institution dedicated to advancing independent living, inclusive social innovation and technologically assisted care for persons in situations of dependency. The foundation promotes models that uphold autonomy, dignity and participation, developing pilot environments that anticipate upcoming legal and social transformations in Spain.

The project anticipates the creation of the new home care and support service established in Article 24bis of the forthcoming Spanish Dependency Law. It will be implemented in five community homes located in the Guanarteme neighbourhood of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Fifteen individuals with moderate to severe dependency will live in these adapted environments, including older adults, people with disabilities and women facing conditions of vulnerability. Each dwelling will integrate accessible home automation, assistive products and non-intrusive monitoring technologies, enabling residents to retain control over their daily life and care decisions.

This model replaces institutional care with an integrated system of physical, mental and social support designed around the user. It is expected to reduce healthcare costs by approximately one quarter, increase autonomy by fifteen Barthel points and prevent unnecessary institutionalisation. Validation will be carried out by the Department of Social Rights of the Canary Islands Government and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The pilot will conclude with a Technical and Economic Implementation Guide in 2027 to enable replication throughout the archipelago.

Villa Longenia aligns fully with the forthcoming Dependency Law and the findings of the 2025 assessment of the Canary Islands public social services system, which identifies deinstitutionalisation, personalised care and the development of intermediate models between home and residential care as strategic priorities. No current public or private enterprise in the region meets the requirements of this new framework. The project therefore addresses a structural policy gap through a community-based, inclusive and economically sustainable approach.

Following the pilot phase, the model will be consolidated through a concerted agreement with the Canary Islands Dependency Service and the commercialisation of its digital platform through a software licence, providing long-term financial autonomy for the Fundación Canaria ALCASIV. The experience will also inform future research on the adaptation of home care models for use in habitable structures situated in extreme or extraterrestrial environments.

General objective

To implement a replicable, rights-based and community-oriented model of home care and support consistent with the new Spanish Dependency Law and the diagnostic priorities of the Canary Islands social services system, promoting autonomy, inclusion and deinstitutionalisation.

Specific objectives

1. Adapt five ordinary homes with assistive devices, home automation and non-intrusive sensors in compliance with Articles 24bis and 25bis.

2. Develop the Villa Longenia integrated model as a 24-hour support management system under user control.

3. Train fifteen professionals, including social workers, caregivers and personal assistants, in the principles of independent living and human rights (Article 21bis).

4. Evaluate the model and produce a Technical, Economic and Quality Guide for its public implementation in 2027 (Article 35).

5. Assess the potential integration of an advanced home assistance robot, such as the 1X NEO.

Conclusion

This pilot represents a decisive step toward transforming care systems in a society facing a rapid demographic shift and the growing burden of chronic disease and disability. Across Spain, and particularly in the Canary Islands, the proportion of older adults living with functional dependency continues to rise while institutional models remain outdated and economically unsustainable. Reaching a healthier old age is no longer only a clinical matter but a social and technological challenge that requires the reorganisation of support networks around autonomy, prevention and continuous monitoring.

The Villa Longenia pilot provides evidence that community-based, technology-enabled care can deliver better outcomes in health, independence and quality of life. Its approach integrates digital monitoring, assistive devices and home automation to detect risks early, support daily functioning and connect individuals with professionals and families in real time. By combining physical, mental and social care within the home, it prevents decline, reduces hospitalisation and extends years of healthy living.

Ongoing undertakings such as this demonstrate that ageing with dignity is achievable when support is designed around the person, not the institution. The challenge is to scale this model across regions, training professionals, empowering families and ensuring public policies sustain environments that promote independence through innovation, accessibility and human rights.

The communications group of the EU BEACON One Health education via new technologies COST action has been recently established to reinforce the integrity of our shared mission. As the scientific communications, dissemination and exploitation officer, I now open this call to all willing to contribute their time, skill, and conscience to a work that is as vital as it is demanding. We need more hands, many more, to sustain the growing weight of communication that comes with building a network grounded in transparency, open science, and collective progress.

The communications group will begin by coordinating a unified media campaign that gives visibility and coherence to the action’s mission across Europe, its associated countries, and key partner nations including Indonesia. Our first joint task will be the release of a complete media kit containing new video materials, long form documentation, interviews, and open editorials designed for both traditional and digital media circulation. We will prepare official letterheads and correspondence packages addressed to top level authorities, key stakeholders, and institutional partners at the national and international level. The campaign will ensure coverage in print, broadcast, and online outlets, using multilingual dissemination channels and strategic engagement with academic, civic, and governmental media networks. Each member of the communications group will contribute to ensuring that the messaging remains factual, inclusive, and aligned with the ethical principles of transparency, open science, and social accountability.

Together, the group’s work will reflect the true scope of the action, spanning the entire COST area with more than forty countries and a combined population exceeding five hundred million people, together with Indonesia as a cooperating partner country, bringing the total reach to nearly eight hundred million individuals, including more than one hundred and fifty million children within their education and health systems. The mandate is clear: to strengthen the democratic function of science communication, to defend the integrity of health and environmental research, and to ensure that knowledge flows freely between citizens, institutions, and decision makers. This media campaign will act as the first structured expression of that mandate, giving form and voice to the action’s vision of an open, evidence based, and socially responsible European and global community working under the shared principles of one health.

This effort unfolds in corrupt, criminal environments, still commonplace, where truth still carries a cost -physical violence, career destruction, extortion, all punitive measures criminals allow themselves, including killing of us. In many places, those who communicate honestly about power, injustice, or harm face not only isolation or defamation, but imprisonment, torture, and even death. From scientists silenced for revealing environmental destruction, to reporters abducted for exposing crimes of state or industry, to educators persecuted for defending independent thought, the pattern is universal. The attempt to serve the public good often meets retaliation from those who depend on ignorance and confusion to retain control.

Corruption has many forms. It hides behind bureaucracy, propaganda, and the pretense of legality. It punishes integrity through exhaustion, fear, and censorship rather than open debate. Across history, reformers, thinkers, and communicators have paid the highest price for refusing complicity. The suppression of knowledge, whether through exile, imprisonment, or violence, remains the most effective tool of those who fear it. Yet each generation has shown that silence sustains injustice, while honest speech dismantles it. Science and journalism form the twin foundations of any democratic society. Both operate as systems of verification, producing and communicating truth through evidence, transparency, and public accountability. Science generates reliable knowledge about the natural and social world, while journalism ensures that this knowledge, and the power structures it affects, reach the public sphere. Together they maintain the dialogue between expertise and citizenship upon which democracy depends. When either is undermined, ignorance replaces informed debate, and authority substitutes evidence. The freedom to investigate, publish, and question enables societies to confront error and corruption, to correct policy, and to adapt to new challenges. In this sense, both scientists and journalists serve not as elites but as custodians of the public’s right to know, the essential condition for collective self-governance.

The action communications group stands on that same ground, to enable a healthy action, non corrupt, non criminally oriented, honest. We coordinate the official publication, the mailing list comms@health.int.eu.org, and all communication channels of the action. Our work is to ensure that truth, once found, cannot be buried again. This is not a ceremonial task but a safeguard of accountability. It combines journalism, science, and civic duty in one field of continuous vigilance. The purpose is to make facts visible, to document what others would prefer to erase, and to preserve the integrity of collective knowledge against manipulation. More resources, all infrastructure and action media, will be built together, from here on.

The network we are building depends on such honesty. Every message we produce must be factual, verifiable, and free from private or political distortion. We communicate not to please but to inform, not to flatter but to clarify. We turn research into understanding and make evidence public, where it belongs. The work is heavy and unrelenting because it touches the nerves of systems that thrive in obscurity. It is imperative, as the only path that sustains progress and shields those who act in good faith against the criminal minded, the abusers, torturers, murderers.

The struggle for truth has always been costly, yet every voice added to the cause makes the cost bearable. Through collective communication, we ensure that knowledge continues to speak even when silence is demanded. This is how progress survives corruption, and how societies recover their conscience. Ours mirrors that of many throughout history who have worked to reveal uncomfortable truths, to document social injustice, and to defend human dignity. Scientists silenced for exposing industrial harm to health and nature. Journalists censored for unveiling state abuse or corporate deceit. Educators and reformers expelled or discredited for challenging dogma or privilege. The means change, but the mechanisms of suppression remain the same: fatigue, intimidation, and isolation.

Those who communicate truthfully about the structures of harm and criminal hands own actions are always the first to be attacked. These patterns are tragically evident in recent times, as much as in all human history, redisplaying the worse of human nature over and over again. This is the human factor in one health, the driving force for all the weakening, sickening, destruction. The one priority to be addressed, from education onward, if we are to stand a chance to do better, society-wide, everywhere.

In Central Africa, a journalist who investigated state corruption and the misuse of public institutions was recently abducted, tortured, and killed. The motive was to suppress revelations threatening the political and financial elite. The crime demonstrated how mechanisms of fear and silence persist within structures of power. Investigations have led to charges against several senior officials, yet the process of justice remains incomplete, reflecting the systemic barriers that protect perpetrators and discourage accountability (Amnesty International, 2024).

In Europe, the killing of a young investigative journalist and his partner after uncovering links between organized crime and political figures triggered massive civic protests and the eventual resignation of a national government, also recently. The killings are ongoing, barely reported. The attack was not random but strategic, aimed at deterring scrutiny and preserving impunity. The assassins have been convicted, but the intellectual authors, those who ordered and financed the crime, continue to evade full responsibility, illustrating the limits of justice when corruption penetrates both economy and state (European Federation of Journalists, 2023).

Elsewhere, in South Asia, a journalist who reported on police corruption and illegal trade networks was found murdered after a series of threats. The brutality of the crime reflected an effort to erase not only a person but also the evidence of structural wrongdoing. Although local authorities arrested suspects, the underlying culture that normalizes violence against truth tellers remains largely intact. There are not isolated events (Committee to Protect Journalists, 2023).

The same mechanisms appear beyond journalism. In environmental science, researchers who documented the health effects of industrial pollutants have faced institutional suppression, professional retaliation, and the destruction of careers. One prominent case revealed deliberate efforts by a multinational corporation to discredit findings on chemical toxicity. Years of legal battles and public exposure eventually forced regulatory change, but only after immense personal and financial tolls on those who stood by the evidence (Lerner, 2023).

The systematic persecution of those who defend life, health, and truth spans the past half century of modern history. Each act of violence against researchers, environmental defenders, health workers, and indigenous leaders is rooted in the same logic: silence those who expose the consequences of greed, deny accountability, and destroy the living evidence of injustice. What unites these events is not geography or ideology but motive—the protection of profit and power against the voice of conscience (Michaels, 2008).

1985 – The Rainbow Warrior bombing
In July 1985, the Greenpeace vessel Rainbow Warrior was docked in Auckland Harbour, New Zealand, preparing to lead a campaign documenting the environmental and human health impacts of nuclear testing in the Pacific. Agents of the French intelligence service placed explosive charges on the hull. The first blast immobilised the ship; the second killed photographer Fernando Pereira, who had returned below deck to retrieve his equipment. The operation had been authorised at ministerial level in Paris. Two agents were convicted of manslaughter in New Zealand and sentenced to ten years, later transferred to French custody and released after less than two. The French government issued an apology and paid compensation, but no senior official faced trial. The motive was explicit: to suppress evidence of radioactive contamination and deter transnational environmental monitoring. The bombing revealed the lengths to which states will go to preserve strategic secrecy under the pretext of national security, even at the cost of civilian life (Friedrichs, 2007).

1990s–2000s – The suppression of environmental health scientists
During the final decade of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first, numerous scientists across Europe, North America, Asia, and Latin America documented toxic pollution, pesticide poisoning, and industrial contamination affecting entire communities. Their findings linked corporate operations to cancer clusters, reproductive disorders, and ecological collapse. In response, corporations and their political allies launched coordinated efforts to erase the credibility of their work. Lawsuits for alleged defamation or breach of confidentiality were common. Laboratories were defunded, journal articles retracted under pressure, and entire research teams dismantled. Many of these scientists were accused of bias or conflict of interest, subjected to smear campaigns, or driven out of academia. Internal documents from multiple chemical and oil companies later revealed intentional strategies to undermine independent research and delay regulation. Careers were destroyed through isolation, economic ruin, and reputational defamation, while the populations they sought to protect continued to suffer from exposure (Michaels & Monforton, 2005).

2000s–2020s – The killings of environmental and indigenous defenders
Across South America, Central Africa, and Southeast Asia, opposition to deforestation, mining, and agribusiness expansion has cost hundreds of lives. The victims include indigenous leaders, teachers, park rangers, and health professionals working with rural populations displaced by land grabs. In Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Honduras, entire communities defending ancestral lands have been targeted by militias financed by logging or plantation interests. Official reports by Global Witness and the United Nations confirm a consistent pattern: the use of paramilitary violence, criminalisation through anti-terror or trespass laws, and manipulation of the judiciary to protect corporate and political elites (Scheidel et al., 2020).

Those who work to end the massacre of first peoples are frequently accused of undermining development or national sovereignty. Health and human rights workers documenting the health consequences of forced displacement are harassed, monitored, or charged with incitement. Land defenders in Borneo and Papua have been killed after reporting illegal forest clearing, often in areas officially designated for conservation. Their deaths are rarely investigated. In many regions, assassinations are preceded by defamation campaigns branding defenders as extremists or foreign agents, followed by bureaucratic suffocation—revocation of operating permits, police harassment, and fabricated criminal charges. The objective is systematic elimination: physical, legal, and social. The result is silence and erasure (Xiong et al., 2021).

2019–2020 – The COVID-19 whistleblower
In late 2019, a young physician in Wuhan identified clusters of pneumonia of unknown origin and alerted colleagues to the risk of a viral outbreak. He was detained by local authorities, forced to retract his statement, and reprimanded for spreading unapproved information. He returned to work under surveillance, contracted the same infection, and died soon after. His courage and professional ethics became an emblem of global moral clarity in the face of repression. The disciplinary action against him was later acknowledged as wrongful, yet those responsible were never prosecuted. The motive behind the silencing was the same that underlies environmental censorship: the defense of reputation, the denial of vulnerability, and the protection of institutional hierarchy over truth. His death demonstrated that the suppression of early warnings transforms errors into catastrophes. He acted as a physician and a citizen committed to the protection of life, and his legacy endures as a reminder that transparency is the first condition of health (Evans & Leach, 2022).

2020s – The continuing obstruction of One Health communication
In this decade, suppression has evolved into a more subtle but equally damaging form. Researchers linking deforestation, industrial agriculture, and climate degradation to the emergence of zoonotic diseases face obstruction through financial pressure and digital harassment. Governments and corporate lobbies have refined strategies to control narratives by funding misinformation and undermining scientific integrity. Experts working on antimicrobial resistance or biodiversity loss have been sidelined from policy processes when their evidence challenges industrial or trade priorities. Funding bodies avoid politically sensitive research, and whistleblowers within public health systems risk career termination. The pattern remains clear: discredit, isolate, exhaust, and, if necessary, destroy the livelihoods of those who warn of systemic harm.

Throughout these decades, from the bombing of an environmental ship to the killing of indigenous defenders and the silencing of physicians, the story is the same. Those who expose harm in the name of public and planetary health are treated as enemies of order. Their destruction is often administrative rather than physical—character assassination, litigation, exclusion, and poverty—but the intention is identical: to erase witnesses and delay truth.

To honor them is to continue their work. Each researcher, activist, and health worker who refused silence embodies the ethical foundation of One Health. They remind us that the defense of life requires more than knowledge; it requires courage. Our duty as communicators is to safeguard that courage, preserve the record of truth, and ensure that no death or defamation achieves what its perpetrators intended.

These cases exemplify how corruption operates when confronted by truth. The motives of torturers and murderers are neither ideological nor personal. They are functional. Their acts are designed to protect illicit wealth, sustain political control, and prevent the spread of verified knowledge. The victims’ silence is not the goal; it is a means to secure the continued operation of impunity.

We work in the setting of corrupt, violent, aggressively criminal societies where the level of discourse, if any, is based on lies, deceit, harassment, more violence by all means available, threats and crimes of the worse nature. Torture. Our work in the action communications group stands in continuity with those who defend truth under threat. We operate to prevent erasure, to document accurately, and to keep evidence public and accessible. Each participant in this mission helps ensure that truth remains stronger than fear. Communication here is not publicity but protection. It is the act of preserving the moral and factual foundation upon which science, governance, and society depend.

The biosphere is failing, and with it, the foundations of life. Biodiversity loss, antimicrobial resistance, climate instability, famine, and social unrest are clinical manifestations of one disease: systemic neglect.

Our duty is to intervene, with reason and precision, through education grounded in science and delivered through the best technological means made available to all. With rigour, expertise, and full commitment, we must ensure learning, equity, and prosperity, taking from despair to thriving all children, future leaders, from every background, prioritizing those most in need.

Planetary evidence is conclusive. The rate of species extinction surpasses natural levels by over a thousandfold. Coral reefs, amphibians, pollinators, and apex predators are vanishing together. Soils lose fertility, oceans acidify, and the atmosphere overheats. The self-regulating mechanisms of the biosphere are breaking down. Human survival now depends on restoring environmental homeostasis through coordinated, evidence-based education and governance.

We now work within EU BEACON One Health Education via New Technologies COST action, a coordinated European framework under the Cooperation in Science and Technology programme. COST sustains collaboration across more than forty countries and welcomes participation from third nations committed to transparency, open science, and collective responsibility.

The task is clear. To integrate human, animal, and environmental health education through advanced and open technologies. EU BEACON One Health Education via New Technologies COST action coordinates education and research systems serving more than one and a half billion people, including over three hundred million children whose health and future depend on timely intervention. The goal is to establish a sustainable, measurable, and inclusive foundation for global One Health education, building capacity, strengthening institutions, and enabling prosperity.

This is a coordinated clinical response to planetary disorder. The action’s duty is to create and maintain an excellence network spanning continents, empowering experts and institutions to assist those most affected, including educators, researchers, and professionals operating at the frontlines of environmental and health crises. By doing so, it advances careers, generates employment, and ensures that innovation serves recovery and stability.

The symptoms of collapse are clear. Forests lose carbon balance. Oceans lose oxygen. Pathogens gain hosts. Conflicts and forced migration arise from scarcity. Pollution and ecological degradation amplify hostility, exploitation, and war. Hate and negligence are secondary infections of a sick planet. These cannot be treated without restoring ecological and educational balance.

Antimicrobial resistance continues to spread. Misuse of antibiotics, industrial waste, and weak surveillance allow microorganisms to evolve beyond therapeutic control. Hospitals, once centers of healing, now propagate resistant infections. Prevention depends on stewardship, wastewater management, vaccination, and genomic monitoring.

Starvation remains a measurable pathology, with devastating effects, direct and indirect, leading to conflict. Avoidable deaths, all. Misery, on a never ending cycle of destruction, unless stopped. Over forty-five million children face acute malnutrition, and more than three million die every year. In the COST area, over thirty million citizens live in food insecurity. Conflict, institutional breakdown, and disease increase the toll. Environmental degradation already causes over thirteen million deaths annually. Surveillance, open data, and education form the operational protocol for restoring biospheric balance through coordinated science, pedagogy, and governance.

It stands in complete opposition to the wasteful, opaque and authoritarian practices that have too often dominated research management and public institutions. Every component of this infrastructure is designed to uphold the highest standards of open science, data transparency and participatory governance. Each euro received is to be allocated and accounted for in full, collectively validated and publicly traceable. Nothing is hidden, nothing wasted. This level of transparency is not rhetorical: it is the only legitimate basis for scientific trust and institutional credibility.

The need for one health education has become acute. Humanity faces a convergence of crises that defy borders and overwhelm systems: wars that devastate entire regions, mass displacements now exceeding one hundred ten million individuals, famine and undernutrition that leave more than forty-five million children across Africa and Asia chronically starving, ecosystems collapsing across continents, and accelerating extinction rates threatening life-supporting biodiversity. In Europe alone, one in ten citizens lives under combined social, environmental and psychological strain linked to systemic instability. These are not abstract statistics but lived realities. The normalisation of neglect, the indifference of those who could act yet choose to remain passive, and the persistence of institutional violence against the vulnerable together constitute one of the gravest moral failures of our age.

The scaffolding through education is one of the very few viable paths out of this global disarray. Our work is, thus, one of the most urgent scientific and civic tasks of our time. To achieve of to fail depends on our work, shared responsibility. The outcome lays before us, ready to be achieved. Building a coherent framework of knowledge that unites health, environment, ethics and governance is now essential for human survival. This is the central purpose of our action. I remain profoundly grateful for the institutional and collegial support that hopefully will allow my work to continue away from abuses of power, neglect and the many forms of psychological and physical violence that have destroyed too many lives and careers. Yet the persistence of such realities cannot be ignored. Those who fail in their duty, who protect impunity under the guise of care or neutrality, contribute to the perpetuation of harm. A lawful, ethical and protective society must defend its scholars and citizens alike from such injustice. Our collective work aims precisely at this transformation: to reinforce education and governance so that life, dignity and learning are preserved under conditions of fairness, accountability and transparency.

That is why we persevere. Thanks to your support, we can continue advancing. The need is immediate and the responsibility immense. As the systems surrounding us collapse under opacity and corruption, we rebuild openly and together. The EU BEACON One Health education network embodies this resolve, an infrastructure for a better order, founded on reason, inclusion and the shared pursuit of truth.

The ongoing work now demands concentration and uninterrupted focus. I will therefore remain offline throughout this week to complete several essential milestones. These include the finalization of literature reviews, a book chapter and a series of peer-reviewed articles; the consolidation of participatory and digital infrastructures; the refinement of stakeholder mapping across the COST region; and the advancement of the global abolition effort against shackling, known as pasung, through coordinated research, grant proposals and digital monitoring systems.

At the same time, I am finalizing an extensive and already highly advanced mapping of more than one thousand institutions, organizations and professional associations across all COST member and partner countries, forming the basis of our first continental outreach and media campaign. This effort consolidates a stakeholder structure connecting ministries, universities, research centres, professional bodies and civil-society organizations into a coherent and functional collaborative network. It targets media professionals, journalists, educators, policymakers, experts and other relevant actors, inviting them to join as allies and new members. The campaign presents EU BEACON as an open, ethical and scientifically rigorous model for education, research and governance across all COST countries and neighbouring regions. Its preparation requires precise verification of data, coordination with national and regional partners, final editing of audiovisual and written materials, multilingual translation and the configuration of automated yet transparent communication pipelines within our infrastructure.

Another central task this week is the technical finalization of the digital infrastructure. I must complete the configuration, testing and documentation of each system, including Leantime for project management, the Stanford Participatory Budgeting Platform for democratic governance, Matrix Element for secure and federated communication, BigBlueButton for academic collaboration and deliberation, and the auxiliary modules for translation, scheduling, mapping and media distribution. Achieving seamless integration and reliability across these services is essential for their official public release. Additional systems are being internally tested and are nearing completion.

Here are some of the key system links already made available, still being tested as well, each serving a distinct role in our infrastructure: the BigBlueButton instance at tele.health.int.eu.org provides the platform for live teaching, webinars, and interactive online sessions across working groups. The Element/Matrix service at element.health.int.eu.org supports secure, encrypted federation-based communication and collaboration among teams, with control over data and identities. The Leantime-based task management portal at tasks.health.int.eu.org offers structured project planning, tracking, milestone organisation and transparency for cross-institutional coordination.

In parallel, I am deploying the new central site of the action together with a much more extensive suite of software required to facilitate the work of all members and collaborators. The next update, expected on Friday night in both this publication and the EU BEACON platform, will mark its release. The integrated environment will include new media kit assets, collective scheduling tools, multilingual surveys, translation services, geographic information modules and collaborative programming environments. It will also feature an expanded collective deadline calendar including new funding calls and opportunities such as the upcoming Horizon round for consortia formation.

All deployed software is fully open source, modular and federated under shared principles of transparency, autonomy and scientific sovereignty. Strict adherence to open science standards is not only an ethical requirement but a methodological necessity. Open systems prevent dependency on opaque proprietary infrastructures, guarantee data reproducibility and ensure long-term sustainability. They secure that every scientific, educational and technical contribution remains verifiable, improvable and publicly accountable. This architecture enables the network to function with complete independence while fostering collaboration grounded in trust, clarity and shared ownership.

In addition, my ongoing research on the abolition of shackling continues to advance. It encompasses the design of digital monitoring and wearable-based early-warning systems, the development of rehabilitation frameworks, and the consolidation of partnerships with institutions and civil organizations in Indonesia, Spain and beyond. This is complex, multidisciplinary work demanding both analytical precision and profound ethical responsibility.

For all these reasons, I must remain completely offline throughout the week, away from any distraction, to complete these tasks and components with the depth and concentration they require. The completion of this stage will secure the stability and readiness of our shared infrastructure, enabling the network to operate as intended for the collective benefit of all.

During the final deployment phase of the EU BEACON One Health education via new technologies COST action infrastructure, coordinated cyberattacks targeted the operational network. The incident affected three physical servers located within the same controlled environment. The smallest and oldest server sustained the most severe compromise and has been permanently decommissioned. Of the two high-capacity production servers, one remains uncompromised and continues to support all critical web services and coordination platforms. The second high-capacity production server was subject to intrusion and remains under suspicion of compromise. On the date of this report, all applications and active systems are being relocated to the verified healthy server to maintain continuous operation while the compromised server undergoes full formatting, clean installation from trusted media, and subsequent dual verification prior to reintegration.

Forensic attribution and long-term analysis have been suspended due to operational necessity, limited staffing, and the absence of allocated external cybersecurity resources. Priority is directed to immediate technical remediation, full restoration of system integrity, and prevention of any recurrence of unauthorised access. The deployment timeline has been delayed, but all essential services remain operational and data integrity is preserved. No confirmed data loss has occurred.

The attacked infrastructure constitutes the operational backbone of the EU BEACON One Health education via new technologies COST action. It sustains secure communications, collaboration platforms, coordination environments, and datasets connecting participating institutions across Europe. Each production server has one hundred twenty-eight gigabytes of RAM memory and several terabytes of standard hard disk storage configured for redundancy. The founder, coordinator, and scientific communications, dissemination, and exploitation officer of the EU BEACON One Health education via new technologies COST action, myself, has for years endured continuous persecution and acts of state-sponsored torture with judicial remedy still pending. This case exemplifies a wider systemic issue in which impunity persists across administrative and enforcement structures. The absence of institutional accountability within certain European services and forces continues to enable severe violations of human rights, including physical, psychological, and professional destruction. These breaches of duty constitute a structural failure of justice within the European Union. They must be recorded and publicly acknowledged until they are corrected through binding mechanisms guaranteeing that such abuses cannot recur.

Within this system, decision science, open science, and data ethics will become integral elements of the curriculum and institutional operation. Students and educators will engage directly with verifiable digital systems, learning through applied participation in transparent governance. Each group will be able to function as a regional node contributing to the continental network, reinforcing operational capacity and collective accountability.

This decentralised model provides a scalable structure for institutional resilience, educational empowerment, and systemic transparency. Regional nodes will operate under unified standards for data protection, auditing, and reporting, ensuring that governance remains consistent, interoperable, and legally sound. These standards will evolve through collaboration with European and national authorities, integrating into the existing legislative and administrative framework of the European Union.

The European Union provides the regulatory and institutional foundation for this initiative. The EU BEACON One Health education via new technologies COST action represents a continental prototype for secure, transparent, and ethical digital governance. The recent attacks confirm both the strategic importance of the action and the hostility directed against transparency and accountability. All active services continue to operate under heightened supervision. No operational downtime affecting partners has been recorded. Security policies are being continuously reviewed and improved. The future needs to get us all, the entire network, developing a proper expert tutor-carer system, generative artificial intelligence strict, ready for the education of our children. The path is being readied.

The mission remains unchanged: to ensure the secure, continuous, and verifiable operation of all systems supporting the EU BEACON One Health education via new technologies COST action, to strengthen the governance and educational network from this stage forward, and to advance the European framework for transparent, ethical, and accountable scientific and educational cooperation. For the longest years this has physically destroyed my own life as well, ruining health, undermining outcomes and contaminating the results of honest work with the actions of criminal, dirty hands and the acquiescence of those around them. Violence and destruction are treated as routine administrative collateral rather than as crimes. The same system that now targets our infrastructure has stalled work on the abolition of pasung, the development of open source digital mental health tools, and all other strands of action research, as well as my own academic and professional career. These decisions and acts of ill will deny every chance to live in peace and to contribute productively. They damage not only the infrastructure but also my loved ones, who bear the immediate consequences of this environment. While we continue to work under these conditions we keep in mind those affected by war, by direct violence and by physical torture as I myself endured for years. This is the human context in which the EU BEACON One Health education via new technologies COST action operates, and it is why securing, sustaining and extending it is not merely a technical requirement but a moral and legal imperative.

The attacks keep on exposing a systemic and deeply entrenched failure within the structures mandated to protect. The normalized neglect and violence against us all. Despite the gravity of these incidents and the public funding involved, compounded by years of torture, no institutional service, law enforcement body, national authority or European mechanism has provided absolutely any effective assistance, protection or investigation. My own life has been ruined from long ago, exposed to crime and further damaged by the alleged ineptitude of the very services and forces tasked to defend the law. The legal system itself has been engaged in the worst outcomes, betraying its duty and operating under plausible deniability for its own criminality. Those acting in bad faith outnumber the good, destroy every chance at remedy, and make it as hard as possible to continue this work. There is no recourse to justice left. What is occurring is not mere negligence but a sustained, deliberate dismantling of rights and protections, a proper lynching carried out under institutional cover.

This situation is reminiscent of the dynamics that have historically dragged societies into war and mass misery. The same cultural milieu, the same deliberate harm, the same willful ignorance and cast lies are again deployed. Violence and destruction are enforced in lieu of law and protection, fulfilling criminal goals under the appearance of administrative order. The infrastructure and personnel of the EU BEACON One Health education via new technologies COST action operate under these conditions while fulfilling a lawful European mandate. This factual context must be recorded because it shows how transparent governance is attacked by the very systems that should defend it. The schedule of the due workshops is being finalised, the papers and outputs are nearing completion, and the core work is substantially completed. This setback, orchestrated by others committed to destruction, does not weaken the action but strengthens its organisation and discipline. It makes us more aware of the presence of those who continue to behave as vultures and criminals, threatening, obstructing and attempting to resume the same torture and destruction they have used for years. Years ago I could barely speak at all due to their beatings and poisoning. Today I continue to speak, to coordinate, and to deliver results. This action is not retreating but advancing, consolidating the work already completed, preparing to release it, and setting in place the secure structures that will ensure that every workshop, every paper, and every programme proceeds, with enhanced planning.

The ongoing attacks, added to the constant risk to my own life and work, reinforce the necessity of consolidating the infrastructure, strengthening institutional collaboration, and expanding operational alliances. The correct response is technical discipline, legal precision, and uninterrupted deployment. System hardening and verification are being executed systematically. The small server has been permanently decommissioned. The compromised large server is being rebuilt from a validated clean state. The healthy production server remains fully operational and under continuous monitoring. No service interruptions have occurred, and core functions of the network remain stable. The commitment of the action’s leadership and partners remains absolute. The objective is to guarantee the permanent security, transparency, and availability of all systems supporting the EU BEACON One Health education via new technologies COST action. The infrastructure will continue to evolve under open, auditable governance. Every financial allocation and operational decision will remain publicly traceable. Hosting it ourselves ensures sovereignty, cost savings, and features tailored to teaching rather than business meetings. Alongside BBB we are deploying Matrix/Element for secure messaging, LeanTime for project management, Consul Democracy for participatory governance, LibreTranslate for multilingual collaboration, and survey tools for rapid engagement. Pooling these open-source resources provides our network with a robust backbone for research, governance, and education while saving money and strengthening sustainability. BigBlueButton (BBB) is the leading open source videoconferencing platform, designed specifically for online learning and collaboration. It was created in 2007 at Carleton University in Canada and has since grown into a global project maintained by a wide community of universities, schools and non profit organizations. Unlike generic video conferencing tools it is built for education with features such as breakout rooms, polls, shared notes, whiteboards and seamless integration with Moodle, Canvas and other learning platforms. It is used by schools and universities across Europe, North America, Asia and Africa, by governments and NGOs for training and health education, and has been adopted in large scale by institutions such as UNESCO, French universities, German schools and Italian hospitals. For our action it represents the best choice because it is open source and sovereign, focused on education rather than business meetings, scalable and affordable, and proven in thousands of classrooms and training programs. It embodies the values of openness, collaboration and trust that we want to sustain in our one health education network.

This is a significant step forward because it gives us our own independent system rather than depending on costly commercial providers. By running our own BBB we save resources, avoid licensing fees, and ensure that the platform serves our needs rather than the other way around. It also allows us to deliver a solution that is richer and more adapted to education than most closed tools on the market, combining security, sovereignty and the interactive features our work requires. I warmly invite everyone to test the platform and experience the difference, your feedback will help us shape it into a powerful space for collaboration and learning for our network.

BBB provides low latency conferencing, breakout groups, shared whiteboard, polls, and recordings, designed for learning at scale rather than generic meetings. Hosting it ourselves reduces cost, improves data stewardship, and permits custom extensions such as tailored layouts, analytics, and multilingual captions aligned with our pedagogy. A stable room permalink simplifies onboarding across schools and partner institutions. BBB is widely deployed across Europe in ministries, regional education systems, and universities, particularly in contexts where privacy, pedagogical integration, and public accountability are essential.

The French Ministry of National Education has adopted BBB as its official infrastructure for webinars and online teaching, and has directly supported its further development. In Germany, the state of Baden-Württemberg rolled out BBB during the pandemic for hundreds of thousands of teachers and students, making it one of the largest educational deployments in Europe. The state of Rhineland-Palatinate operates a central BBB service for all schools, colleges, and universities, ensuring compliance with data protection rules and providing dedicated support. The municipal media center in Wiesbaden hosts BBB for local schools, integrating it with authentication systems under strict privacy standards. In South Tyrol, schools adopted BBB hosted on European servers to guarantee data sovereignty while maintaining continuity of learning.

These cases show that ministries and regional education authorities trust BBB at large scale. They demonstrate that the platform functions reliably under strict European data protection requirements, can integrate smoothly with school IT systems, and supports both everyday teaching and emergency remote education.

For our action, BBB is the most fitting choice because it is open source and sovereign, giving us control over data and code while avoiding dependence on external vendors. It was designed specifically for education rather than business meetings, offering breakout rooms, polls, whiteboards, shared notes, and recording tools optimized for learning. It is scalable and affordable, suitable for use in many classrooms simultaneously without licensing restrictions. Most importantly, it is proven across Europe by ministries and schools under conditions comparable to ours, making it both a safe and strategic choice.

Adopting BBB reflects our commitment to openness, collaboration, and trust. By building on an open source system already recognized in European education, we ensure that our one health education network stands on a solid, sustainable foundation while contributing improvements back to the global community.

The action team chat messaging and federation will be soon powered through Matrix on our infrastructure. Matrix is an open protocol for secure real time communication across organizations. It enables rooms, threads, and end to end encryption with bridges to other networks when needed. Running our own homeserver ensures sovereign control of identities and retention policies while enabling federation with universities and ministries that already use Matrix. Element is the primary web and desktop client for Matrix. It offers a clean interface, robust search, verified encryption, voice and video calls, and spaces for hierarchical organization of working groups. For users accustomed to classic chat with a visible member list it can be configured to present an always visible roster, enabling frictionless adoption during workshops and governance sessions. This bit of our infrastructure will be ready between tomorrow and next Friday.

LeanTime will manage projects, sprints, roadmaps, Gantt plans, timesheets, and retrospectives. Its lightweight design suits multidisciplinary teams spread across countries. One workspace per work package with shared calendars and task boards gives clear accountability and transparent progress for dissemination and exploitation milestones. Self hosting avoids vendor lock in and permits tailored roles for students, teachers, and external collaborators.

SurveyMonkey will provide rapid survey deployment while the consortium ramps up, particularly for time critical stakeholder canvassing. It supports complex skip logic and fast distribution at scale. For research ethics and open science alignment we will in parallel prepare a self hosted alternative based on LimeSurvey to enable full data portability, custom consent workflows, and multilingual forms for schools.

Consul Democracy will underpin participatory governance. The platform supports proposals, debates, participatory budgeting, and formal voting with verifiable processes. It gives working groups a clear path from discussion to decision, records deliberation trails, and aligns with our commitment to transparent and reproducible governance. Hosting it within our domain integrates identity and audit with the rest of the stack.

Open source matters for three reasons central to this action. First, technical sovereignty ensures that data, algorithms, and workflows remain under our control, meeting European values and school safeguarding norms. Second, adaptability allows us to extend features needed for one health education, from accessibility to domain specific analytics, then contribute improvements upstream for community benefit. Third, sustainability arises from a shared development ecosystem where maintenance, security patches, and localization are community efforts, not single vendor promises.

The integration plan is straightforward and pragmatic. This stack gives the action a coherent digital backbone for teaching, collaboration, decision making, and outreach. It minimizes recurring cost, maximizes control, and creates a conduit for research to inform technology while technology strengthens research and education.

At trans.health.int.eu.org I have deployed LibreTranslate, an open-source neural machine translation system, as part of a broader strategy to pool shared resources for our entire network. LibreTranslate illustrates the principle behind our digital infrastructure: rather than relying on expensive third-party platforms, we host and maintain powerful tools ourselves, ensuring sovereignty over data, adaptability to our needs, and open access for all members of the action. By doing so, we save substantial costs while making advanced services freely available to schools, universities, ministries, and civil society partners.

By hosting these services together within our network’s system, we are creating an integrated toolkit that supports all dimensions of our work: collaborative research, governance, education, dissemination, and outreach. This infrastructure does more than save money. It provides our action with the best possible power tools for participatory action research and for missions where inclusivity, transparency, and data protection are non-negotiable. It allows us to adapt features to one health priorities, such as customizing translation models for medical and environmental terminology, shaping decision-making platforms to reflect our governance ethos, or fine-tuning videoconferencing to classroom and fieldwork realities.

By pooling these resources, we embody a sustainable model of collective ownership. Every member of the network benefits from state-of-the-art services without bearing individual licensing costs, while the improvements we make can be shared back with the global open-source communities that maintain them. This approach aligns with our values of openness, collaboration, and solidarity, ensuring that our one health education network has both the independence and the technological strength to thrive.

Hardware-wise, we have secured what can only be described as an absolute bargain: access to a very high-performance virtual private server that gives us resources normally reserved for large-scale enterprises. The machine provides almost 4 terabytes of storage (3.906 TB), 32 virtual CPU cores, and 128 gigabytes of RAM memory. This combination of storage, processing power, and memory capacity places us in a position to run simultaneously the full stack of services needed for our action without fear of bottlenecks or scalability issues. For BigBlueButton, such resources mean we can sustain multiple parallel conferences with video, audio, and recording without degradation of quality, even at times of heavy use by hundreds of students. For Matrix and Element, the extra memory and CPUs guarantee responsive chat and federation even as our user base grows into the thousands. LeanTime, Consul Democracy, and survey platforms can each be hosted in production-grade instances, isolated and secured, while still benefiting from a common infrastructure. The large disk capacity is critical for long-term storage of recordings, shared files, and backups, ensuring that we do not depend on external providers for basic capacity.

The cost–benefit ratio is extraordinary. Comparable servers are typically priced well beyond the budget of an academic project, and it is costing us less than fifty euros per month. By securing this one at low cost we ensure that all consortium members and school partners benefit from enterprise-class performance for the price of a modest service. This not only maximizes sustainability and independence but also allows us to experiment, improve, and share innovations with the open source community, fully confident that our infrastructure can handle the workload.

I am doing my best to complete the installation of the entire digital infrastructure in time for the action’s kick-off. The videoconferencing system was the most urgent priority, as it is essential for our immediate coordination and teaching needs, and it is now fully operational. The remaining services are in the process of being deployed and configured, and will be ready shortly, ensuring that our network starts its work with a complete, robust, and open digital backbone. One forthcoming paper examines the practice of pasung, shackling, the chaining of individuals to the abusers own disgraceful ways to hold and restrain, keep under control as if that was healing, locking, a form of torture that must never be justified. This work situates pasung within four centuries of biocultural re-education and structural control, from imperial Spain through the colonial and post-colonial histories of Indonesia. It shows how practices of punishment and restraint have been normalized, and why they must now be abolished through education, law, and policy.

Across the last four centuries, both the Spanish Empire and the territories of present-day Indonesia have borne systemic atrocities that reveal the endurance of violence as an instrument of governance. Spain, during its imperial expansion, imposed mass displacement, enslavement, forced conversion, and land confiscation. Entire populations were subjected to inquisitorial punishments, executions, and cultural erasure. The empire codified violence as law, presenting it as order, while annihilating self-determination and cultural plurality. Indonesia, though not occupied primarily by Spain except in certain islands, suffered under successive colonial regimes. Portuguese, Dutch, British, and Japanese authorities imposed forced labor, taxation, and plantation systems that caused famine, mass death, and long-term impoverishment. The cultuurstelsel of the nineteenth century, for example, transformed agriculture into a mechanism of exploitation that broke communities. In addition, the persistence of pasung, the chaining of people suffering diseased of despair and/or the results of violence, or simply cast away and locked due to alleged social deviance, represents not merely a traditional practice but an inherited normalization of restraint and punishment, reinforced by structural neglect.

The cultuurstelsel, imposed in 1830 by the Dutch crown after taking control from the bankrupt East India Company, forced Javanese villages to dedicate at least one fifth of their land and labor to export crops such as sugar, coffee, and indigo, though in practice far more was extracted, leading to famine, disease, and the collapse of subsistence farming while Dutch revenues soared.

Enforcement relied on military violence, with punitive expeditions that destroyed villages, killed civilians, and in some cases amounted to genocide through the deliberate clearing of populations from their lands. Sexual exploitation was widespread, with women and girls coerced into servitude and routinely subjected to abuse by colonial officials, local collaborators, and plantation managers, turning sexual enslavement into a normalized practice within the system of tribute and coercion. Communities were stripped of autonomy, their governance broken, their survival undermined by structural violence that blurred the boundaries between taxation, slavery, and tribute. Public exposure in the late XIXth century, initiated through the novel Max Havelaar, eventually led to gradual dismantling, yet the logic of exploitation persisted under private plantations, leaving behind entrenched poverty, ecological devastation, and the deep social scars of forced labor, systemic violence, and cultural destruction.

Atrocities, current and past, must never be framed, portrayed by anyone, as isolated acts, nor as residing as illnesses in the bodies of those suffering the sociocultural and geopolitical realities, the tortures by any means and degrees of it, in their daily lives. They belong to long trajectories of control, legitimated by claims of civilization, morality, or public health. Medicine must never be at the service of torturers, nor any of the many abusive masters of olden and present times. Poison, violence, chained bodies, and censored minds are recurring realities, still present, of such normalization. Historical acts echo into the present, where the refusal to abolish inhumane practices perpetuates them under new disguises. This paper poses a way to learn from past improvements, and current best practices to abolish, as our standing legality, and our global law, as well as all religious codes and sacred text that are worthy of that name, command us all to do, enforce, achieve.

Other papers are in preparation. One focuses on the political abuse of psychiatry, where diagnostic authority has been misused to discredit and silence, turning medicine into an instrument of power rather than care. Literature reviews address digital mental health, defining standards and frameworks for ethical and safe deployment. Another paper focuses on one health education, developed under the framework of a COST action, demonstrating the importance of integrated, interdisciplinary, and international approaches. These contributions reflect the seriousness and reach of the networks involved.

Our technical infrastructure is also advancing. Servers are being stacked and prepared, with all major updates and installations scheduled in the next few days. All services will be ready by next week. These platforms will support collaboration, governance, translation, and publication. They form the operational foundation of our next phase of collective work. At the same time, preparations for the first expansion of the COST action are underway. The initial media campaign is being designed and will be launched soon, with a complete media kit and an open invitation to join. A video prepared for this release illustrates our mission and will accompany the campaign.

The guiding principle is open science. Knowledge must be collective, transparent, and shared across disciplines and societies. Consilience is essential: anthropology offers biocultural analysis, biology and ecology provide foundations for understanding life and environment, cognitive sciences reveal how human minds adapt and resist, and health sciences connect care with justice. Together with the social sciences and law, these fields must converge to address the crises of health, environment, and inequality. The mandate is clear. We must educate, abolish practices that degrade human life, and strengthen those that protect it. The foundations codified worldwide after the Holocaust, and reinforced in subsequent conventions, remain our compass. Custom, appearance, tokenism, purest the cargo cult behaviors at maintaining the facade without the spirit nor substance, the real actions required, all false claims of morality, never excuse cruelty. Science and society alike uphold human dignity, openly and without compromise, or simply betray it.

There is one last update I am very glad to share. We will be contributing a small package to the Debian community, with the hope that it will soon run across all its distributions and derivatives. It is called scient, a scientific entities extractor. The package is still a work in progress, not yet finished. The name reflects both simplicity and multiplicity, for one word may hold many meanings, often distorted through mistyping or poor OCR, intentionally cut short for good or worse. It will become one more collective contribution. As our action itself, it will begin modestly, yet will grow steadily, serving a specific and valuable task. It will support our ongoing mapping work, our literature reviews, the media campaign, and our outreach to new potential members. Workshops dates will follow in due course. For now, the priority has been to place the action on the strongest possible track. I am doing my utmost to invite those who can and wish to contribute, and I encourage you to take the initiative and share freely. Soon, I will provide links to the testing of the new services, alongside pending meetings. I am proud to be installing open-source solutions for us all to use, ensuring the highest standards while saving our shared action money, resources, and time. This is also a learning process for me, and I advance with it step by step.

The goal has been abundantly stated already: to reach all children, all schools willing, and everyone in need, our mandate. I will do my best to comment and document the code as we proceed.
